Description
Kacilia Zabi is the only daughter of Degwin Sodo Zabi, the sovereign of the Principality of Zeon, and holds the rank of major general as the commander of the Zeon Mobile Assault Force. She is a calculating and ambitious leader with a distinctive appearance, characterized by her red hair and the facial mask she almost always wears. The mask is said to serve a practical function as protection against radiation, while other interpretations suggest it stems from a personal aversion to the smell of blood or a conscious decision to reject traditional femininity following traumatic political events.
In her role as a military leader, Kacilia is defined by her cold pragmatism and political shrewdness. Recognizing that directly challenging her elder brother, Gihren, for political supremacy would be difficult, she focused on building a formidable independent power base centered on innovative military technology and an expansive intelligence network. She was a forceful advocate for the mass production and strategic use of mobile suits, a position that put her in direct opposition to her other brother, Dozle, who favored traditional fleet warfare. This conflict was ultimately resolved by dividing the Zeon military; Dozle was placed in command of the Space Attack Force, while Kacilia was given control of the newly formed Mobile Assault Force, which she operated largely from her lunar base at Granada.
Kacilia's motivations are deeply rooted in ambition and a desire for power within the Zabi family hierarchy. Unlike Gihren, whose fanatical devotion to Zionic ideology sometimes overrode strategic sense, Kacilia was more results-oriented and willing to embrace unorthodox methods to secure victory. She invested heavily in the Flanagan Institute, the first Zeon research facility dedicated to studying and weaponizing Newtypes, viewing their potential as a decisive military advantage. Her approach to leadership was a blend of fierce loyalty to her effective subordinates and utter ruthlessness towards those who failed or threatened her objectives. She was known for executing her own officers for leaking intelligence and, in a more infamous example, ordered the destruction of a mining base with un-evacuated soldiers still inside to prevent its resources from falling into enemy hands. Despite this cruelty, she demonstrated a more pragmatic and sometimes lenient side as a commander, notably supporting Char Aznable after the death of her youngest brother, Garma, and refraining from harsh punishment when Char struggled to pilot a new mobile suit prototype.
Her relationships within the Zabi family are fraught with tension. She harbored intense political rivalry with Gihren, whom she saw as the primary obstacle to her own rise, yet she remained loyal to their father, Degwin. This loyalty was tested when Degwin attempted to negotiate a separate peace with the Earth Federation; Kacilia secretly informed Gihren of their father's location, leading Gihren to kill Degwin with a colony-destroying superweapon. Upon learning of this patricide at the final battle of A Baoa Qu, Kacilia immediately executed her brother by shooting him in the head, declaring that even a sovereign could not be allowed to murder his own father. Her relationship with Char Aznable is equally complex. Recognizing him from childhood as Casval Rem Deikun, the son of Zeon’s founder whom her family had displaced, she did not expose his true identity. Instead, she brought him into her command, apparently believing she could secure the loyalty of a potentially dangerous enemy by keeping his secret.
Kacilia's story reaches its conclusion in the chaos of the Battle of A Baoa Qu. After killing Gihren, she assumed command of the entire Zeon defense. However, as the battle turned against Zeon, she attempted to flee aboard her flagship, the Chimera. At that moment, Char Aznable, revealing his true intentions, fired a rocket launcher into the ship's bridge, killing her. Her death and the subsequent destruction of her flagship threw the Zeon forces into disarray, marking the effective collapse of the Zabi family's grip on the Principality.
