Description
Fraw Bow, who later takes the name Fraw Kobayashi, is a central civilian character from the Universal Century timeline. She is 15 years old at the start of the story and originally resides on the space colony Side 7. She lives there with her mother and grandfather, and her family background is notably of German descent. As a neighbor and close friend of Amuro Ray, Fraw assumes a self-appointed role as his caretaker. Because Amuro's father is frequently absent for work and his mother lives separately on Earth, she regularly brings him meals, checks on his personal hygiene, and ensures he follows important instructions like evacuation orders.

Fraw's personality is defined by her nurturing and caring nature. She is described as a freckled-cheeked girl who acts as a constant source of hope and practical support, even during the most desperate moments of the war. She is responsible and level-headed, quickly recovering from personal tragedy to focus on the needs of others. When she isn't performing her official duties on the White Base, she volunteers to care for the ship's wounded or look after the three young orphans who have lost their parents. Her primary motivation throughout the conflict is the safety and well-being of those around her, particularly Amuro, though this focus gradually broadens to include her new family and crewmates.

During the Zeon attack on Side 7, Fraw loses her mother and grandfather in an explosion while she is searching for Amuro. Her survival is a direct result of her concern for him. This traumatic event serves as a catalyst for Amuro to pilot the Gundam for the first time. As a refugee, she evacuates aboard the warship White Base. Initially, she performs various support roles, but she eventually becomes the ship's official communications officer, taking over the position from Sayla Mass when Sayla becomes a mobile suit pilot. In addition to her communication duties, she becomes the primary maternal figure for the three orphans Katz, Letz, and Kikka, taking responsibility for their daily care.

Fraw's most significant relationships change dramatically over the course of the war. She harbors deep romantic feelings for her childhood friend Amuro Ray, but these affections are largely one-sided. As Amuro's Newtype abilities awaken and he becomes increasingly distant, drawn to figures like Matilda Ajan and Lalah Sune, Fraw feels a painful jealousy and realizes that she can no longer bridge the gap to his heart. In contrast, she finds comfort and connection with Hayato Kobayashi, another childhood friend who confides his insecurities about not being as skilled a pilot as Amuro. They gravitate toward each other as Amuro drifts further away.

Following the One Year War, Fraw marries Hayato and formally adopts the three orphans she cared for on the White Base. She becomes pregnant with Hayato's biological child and takes the surname Kobayashi. Despite her marriage, complex feelings for Amuro linger. In the years that follow, her life is marked by tragedy. During the Gryps Conflict, her adopted son Katz is killed in battle. Shortly after, during the First Neo Zeon War, her husband Hayato dies during the colony drop on Dublin, leaving Fraw a widow. In later years, she supports her daughter Kikka's efforts to publish a biography about Amuro, providing letters and contacts to help humanize the legendary pilot.

Fraw does not possess any notable combat abilities or Newtype powers in the main animated continuity. Her strengths are entirely domestic and interpersonal. She is valued for her reliable communication skills as a ship operator and her unwavering emotional resilience. She is the caretaker, the communicator, and the one who maintains the human connections that hold the crew together, even as the war drives them apart. Her development is defined by her transition from a love-struck girl defined by her proximity to a hero into a strong, independent woman who has endured loss, raised a family, and found her own path forward.
