TV-Series
Description
Malm Tatsuno, called Zoe Drake in English adaptations, serves as one of three primary protagonists. She is the younger sister of scientist Reese Drake; their parents work as veterinarians running an animal hospital. Zoe is documented as age 12 during Mesozoic Meltdown, potentially 11 earlier given Rex's birthday and unclear passage of time.

Her appearance varies across media. The anime depicts her with pastel pink hair in spiked pigtails secured by yellow scrunchies, violet eyes, a black midriff-baring top under an unbuttoned mustard-and-scarlet safari vest, matching shorts, a leather fanny pack, thigh-length black stockings, and lime-and-black sneakers. Accessories include a lime-green choker, dinosaur-tooth necklace, and wristbands; her sunglasses function as a camera. Alternate anime outfits include a green-trimmed pink swimsuit, pink ninja suit, and Christmas attire. The arcade and DS game portray her with hot pink hair, red-tinted goggles, a longer-sleeved black tank top, and a fully buttoned vest, omitting the dinosaur-tooth necklace but retaining the green choker. Her hair reaches nearly waist-length when down.

Personality-wise, Zoe is generally caring and happy-go-lucky but exhibits bossiness, particularly toward Max and Rex when unsupervised, and demonstrates physical toughness when angered. She maintains a persistent rivalry with Alpha Gang member Ursula, frequently calling her "old lady," a term Ursula inexplicably hears regardless of distance. While Rex harbors a crush on her, her romantic interests appear limited to celebrities initially; she later shows ambiguous flirtatious behavior toward Max and irritation when he and Rex develop crushes on Zahrah. Arcade depictions show greater maturity, independence, and assertiveness while retaining her cheerful demeanor and sisterly concern for friends.

Her primary dinosaur partner is a Parasaurolophus named Paris, specializing in Grass-type dinosaurs. Paris often mirrors Zoe's personality, including bossiness toward other dinosaurs, and proves instrumental in the D-Team's victories. In arcade games, Zoe can utilize dinosaurs of all elements but favors Grass and Lightning types for specific missions.

Key narrative involvement includes discovering the Grass Stone after a meteor crash and becoming its wielder, activating Paris's card, and confronting the Alpha Gang during capture attempts. She participates in global dinosaur recovery missions, assists in foiling Alpha Gang schemes at the D-Lab, and experiences emotional farewells when Rex, his parents, and the Alpha Gang depart for the future. During Mesozoic Meltdown, her family is captured by Spectral Space Pirates, prompting an alliance between the D-Team and former adversaries for their rescue.

In non-anime media, Zoe is absent from the manga as an anime-original character later incorporated into arcade iterations. The DS game limits her role to a non-playable character; she is taken hostage by the Alpha Gang, necessitating rescue, and her personal items are stolen post-game.

Trivia notes: "Tatsuno" combines Japanese characters for "dragon" and "field," while "Malm" derives from Upper Jurassic rock formations. "Zoe" means "life" in Greek, and "Drake" references dragons, linking to the Japanese word for dinosaurs. Her arcade outfit resembles Runo Misaki's from Bakugan, and her hairstyle parallels Amu Hinamori's transformations in Shugo Chara. She ranked 71st in the 2009 Anime Saimoe Tournament and 48th in the Dinosaur King Ranker.
