Description
The character referred to as Peter (Amuro) Rei is Amuro Ray, the central protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam and its 1988 feature film Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack, with a supporting role in the sequel Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. Born on November 4, Universal Century 0063, Amuro is the son of Tem Ray, the Earth Federation engineer leading the mobile suit development project known as Project V, and his wife Kamaria Ray. His parents separated when he was young, and he accompanied his father through various postings before settling in the Side 7 space colony. Left alone for long stretches, Amuro grew into a reserved and introverted teenager who preferred building and tinkering with machines over socializing, and one of his personal projects was the small spherical robot Haro, which he modified from a commercial toy.
At the beginning of the One Year War, when Zeon forces attacked Side 7, the fifteen-year-old Amuro stumbled aboard the prototype RX-78-2 Gundam and, using the operator's manual and his own intuition, managed to activate the machine and destroy two attacking Zaku mobile suits. His desperate act made him the Gundam's pilot on the Earth Federation ship White Base under Captain Bright Noa. Although initially reluctant and frequently at odds with the crew, Amuro proved to be a naturally gifted pilot whose skills grew rapidly throughout the war. His white Gundam earned him the nickname White Devil among Zeon forces, and his combat record made him one of the most successful pilots of the conflict. As the war continued, his Newtype abilities emerged, granting him heightened spatial awareness, precognitive instincts in battle, and the capacity to sense the thoughts and presence of other people.
Amuro's personality develops through a clear arc over the course of his appearances. At the start he is antisocial, prickly, and prone to misunderstanding those around him, but he gradually opens up to his shipmates and comes to see the White Base crew as his true family. The accidental death of Lalah Sune, a Newtype girl with whom he formed a deep psychic bond, when she shielded the Zeon ace Char Aznable from Amuro's attack, becomes a defining trauma. His rivalry with Char Aznable is the emotional center of his story, and the shared guilt over Lalah's death binds the two men across decades of conflict. After the One Year War, Amuro is placed under house arrest by a distrustful Earth Federation government, works as a trainer and adviser at a mobile suit academy, and suffers from combat fatigue, a lingering guilt over Lalah, and a fear of returning to space. He regains his purpose during the Gryps Conflict when his childhood friend Fraw Bow and her adopted children help him escape from his handlers, after which he joins the anti-Titans organization Karaba and leads crucial missions, including the attack on the Titans' base at Mount Kilimanjaro and the occupation of the Federation Congress building in Dakar. By the time of Char's Counterattack, he has matured into a confident officer serving as the mobile suit squadron leader of the Londo Bell task force, committed to stopping Char's plan to drop the asteroid Axis on Earth.
His key relationships include his estranged parents, his lifelong friend and caretaker Fraw Bow, his commanding officer Bright Noa, and his rival Char Aznable, with romantic attachments to Sayla Mass, Beltorchika Irma, and Chan Agi in different versions of the story. Alongside his piloting, Amuro is a gifted engineer and mechanic; he plays a major role in designing the RX-93 Nu Gundam and frequently uses his technical knowledge to maintain and improve his own machines, pushing them well beyond their rated limits.
His notable abilities include exceptional skill as a mobile suit pilot in all forms of combat, at both close and long range, and the capacity to handle multiple opponents at once, all enhanced by his Newtype perception. In his final battle, his willpower and Newtype abilities allow him to attempt to physically push the asteroid Axis away from Earth, an act that overloads his Gundam's psycho-frame and causes him to disappear in a brilliant aurora alongside Char, completing his journey from a reluctant child soldier into a symbol of human potential.
