Dr. Ancient is a paleontologist from the year 2126. Together with his wife, Dr. Cretacia, he discovered the Element Stones and engineered the technology to transport dinosaurs into cards. They constructed the Backlander, a time machine, to journey into the Mesozoic Era after intercepting the dinosaurs' pleas for help to avoid extinction.

During this mission, Dr. Ancient and Dr. Cretacia brought the Alpha Gang along. Their leader, Dr. Z, defied Dr. Ancient’s directives by creating the first Move Card, summoning Acrocanthosaurus and Ampelosaurus to fight. Dr. Ancient also disapproved of another Alpha Gang member, Seth, for his efforts to evolve dinosaurs into ultimate weapons.

Dr. Ancient and Dr. Cretacia are the biological parents of Rex Owen. As an infant, Rex was sent forward through time when Dr. Z and Seth jettisoned the parents' escape pods into the timestream in an attempt to eliminate them. Rex was later discovered and adopted by Dr. Owen.

In the second season, Dr. Ancient, Dr. Cretacia, and other parents were abducted by the Spectral Space Pirates. Their leader, Spectre, compelled Dr. Ancient to assist in locating the seven Cosmos Stones. Dr. Ancient urged Spectre to abandon the quest, cautioning that gathering all the stones would bring dire consequences, but his warnings went unheeded.

After a prolonged separation, Dr. Ancient and Dr. Cretacia were reunited with their son Rex. Upon the defeat of the Spectral Space Pirates, they retrieved the dinosaur cards and Element Stones from both the D-Team and the Alpha Gang. They then returned to the year 2126 aboard the Backlander, accompanied by Rex, Jonathan, and the Alpha Gang.
