Description
Ken Sanada is a character defined by his dual existence across two parallel realities, serving as a catalyst for the story's central events. In the original world, designated World A, he is a brilliant but eccentric scientist dedicated to the study of parallel universes. His passion for his work often consumes him entirely, to the point where he frequently forgets to change his clothes, eat, or tend to basic needs. He lives with his daughter, Mitsuki Sanada, who has taken on the role of caretaker following the departure of his wife, Ayuko. It is Ken’s research that provides the key to understanding why the protagonist, Kazuki Yotsuga, can see visions of giant robots that no one else perceives. When an accident involving his experimental dimensional transfer device sends Kazuki and Mitsuki into another world, it is Ken’s work that inadvertently initiates the entire adventure.

In the parallel world, World B, Ken Sanada exists as a different version of himself. Here, he is not an eccentric basement scientist but the commanding officer of the Earth Defense Force. While this version is less overtly unhinged than his counterpart, he retains a goofy and jovial demeanor that often exasperates his stern advisor, Akane Yamano. Despite his lighthearted and sometimes seemingly irresponsible behavior, Commander Sanada is a highly capable and respected leader. When the United Nations turns against the Earth Defense Force, his subordinates remain fiercely loyal to him, proving that his competence and the respect he commands run deep beneath his comedic surface.

Across both realities, certain core traits remain consistent. Both Kens share an unyielding love for instant ramen and possess a slightly off-color sense of humor. Most importantly, both versions immediately recognize that Kazuki is special and plays a pivotal role in the fate of their worlds. However, their family situations differ drastically. While World A Ken is Mitsuki’s biological father, World B Ken is childless, though he allows the World B version of Mitsuki to live in his home and call him Dad, effectively becoming a father figure to her and the other young pilots. He has a talent for matchmaking and deliberately orchestrates a chaotic household by arranging for Kazuki, the bioroid D, the pilot Yayoi Schwael, and even the enemy pilot Mitsuki Rara to all live under one roof or as next-door neighbors. This calculated meddling is a key part of his role in the story, as he actively sets the stage for the relationships and conflicts that drive the narrative forward.

Ken Sanada’s primary role in the story is that of the instigator and the organizer. He is the one who builds the dimensional portal, brings Kazuki into the fold, and assembles the makeshift family and military unit that forms the core of the Earth Defense Force’s resistance. He serves as a father figure to the younger characters, offering guidance, comic relief, and a surprising amount of strategic acumen. His motivations are a blend of scientific curiosity and a genuine, if unconventionally expressed, desire to protect the young people in his charge and to resolve the dangerous instability threatening both dimensions.

Throughout the series, Ken shows a notable development in his relationships, particularly with Akane Yamano. While she begins as his long-suffering advisor in World B, their bond deepens over the course of the conflict. By the end of the series, when the two parallel worlds are merged into a single reality by Kazuki’s wish, Ken Sanada is transformed once more. In this new, combined world, he returns to being a scientist, is happily married to Akane, and has a family that includes Mitsuki as his daughter once again and the former bioroid D as his adopted daughter, Dee Sanada.

Ken Sanada does not possess any superhuman or combat-oriented abilities. His most notable abilities are his genius-level intellect in the field of dimensional physics and his unconventional but effective leadership skills. He is the creator of the technology that allows for interdimensional travel and is the strategic mind behind the Earth Defense Force’s operations in World B. His true talent lies in his ability to see the bigger picture, understand the mechanics of the multiverse, and bring together the right people to solve a crisis, even if his methods seem bizarre or overly comedic on the surface.
