Description
Nenji Kashiwazaki, most commonly known by his shinobi name Okina, is a supporting character who plays a crucial role during the Kyoto arc. He is an elder member of the Oniwabanshu, the former shogunate's covert task force of ninja and spies. Born in September 1819, he is sixty years old at the time of his first appearance and stands at 165 centimeters tall. He operates the Aoiya, a combined restaurant and inn in Kyoto that served as the Oniwabanshu's headquarters, which was later converted into a safehouse and legitimate business for his comrades after the fall of the Tokugawa shogunate.
At first glance, Okina presents himself as a cheerful, easygoing, and somewhat lecherous old man. He has a great love for life, enjoying drinking games and the company of beautiful women, and often acts silly or self-absorbed, which conceals his true nature. However, he possesses a fierce sense of honor, loyalty, and justice. When the situation becomes grave, his demeanor shifts entirely to one of intense sternness. In his prime, he was infamously known as the most frightening figure of the Oniwabanshu, capable of carrying out horrific tortures on adversaries, such as using nails and candles during interrogations, without hesitation when the need arose. This duality makes him a complex figure; he is a loving guardian but also a hardened veteran of a brutal era.
His primary motivation is the protection of his comrades and the new era of peace. He feels a deep responsibility for the younger generation, which is the main reason he is not the leader of the Oniwabanshu. After the previous okashira (commander) died, Okina was the favored candidate to take over. Instead, he chose to step aside and recommend the younger and more promising Shinomori Aoshi, believing it was time for the old to make way for the young. He then volunteered to lead the Kyoto branch to focus on intelligence gathering. When Shishio Makoto threatens to overthrow the Meiji government, Okina commits his resources and network to support Himura Kenshin, the former Hitokiri Battosai, as he sees Kenshin as Japan's only hope against the new threat.
In the story, Okina serves as the Kyoto base commander and strategist for the allies. He first welcomes Kenshin and his ward Misao back to Kyoto, immediately recognizing Kenshin's true identity as the Battosai despite his gentle demeanor. He offers Kenshin the Aoiya as a base of operations and uses his extensive intelligence network to assist him, most notably helping to locate the swordsmith Arai Seikuu to forge a new sakabato and finding Kenshin's master, Hiko Seijuro XIII. His most significant action is confronting a corrupted Aoshi. Honoring his threat to strike down his former protégé if he lost his honor, Okina engages Aoshi in a vicious duel. Despite his formidable skills, he is defeated and left in a coma, which removes him from the front lines of the final battle against Shishio's elite Juppongatana.
Okina’s most important relationships are with Misao Makimachi and Shinomori Aoshi. He is the foster parent and mentor of Misao, having raised her after Aoshi left her in his care. He deeply cares for her safety and welfare, teaching her combat techniques and trying to protect her from the darker truths of their world. His relationship with Aoshi is that of a wise mentor to a brilliant but troubled student. He has great faith in Aoshi's potential and sacrifices his own ambition for Aoshi's rise. When Aoshi loses his way and allies with Shishio, Okina is the one who feels the moral obligation to stop him, even if it means killing his former comrade. After his defeat and recovery, he is present at the final confrontation between Kenshin and Aoshi and is ultimately relieved when Kenshin succeeds in bringing Aoshi back from his obsession.
Despite his age, Okina is an exceptionally skilled fighter and a talented strategist. His reputation holds that he was the only one capable of matching the previous Oniwabanshu leader in combat. His primary weapon is a pair of twin steel tonfa, which he uses with great skill to deflect sword strikes and deliver powerful blows. In battle, he is noted for his deceptive speed, strength, and endurance, which belie his elderly appearance. He is also a master of an unorthodox martial art referred to as Sexy Commando, and he has a habit of exclaiming Hyo when surprised. His true strength is not just physical but mental; after being injured, he continues to act as the strategic mastermind for the defense of the Aoiya, proving that his quick mind remains his most powerful asset.
