TV-Series
Description
Dr. Gensai Oguni is a skilled elderly physician who owns and operates a modest clinic in downtown Tokyo, situated near the Kamiya dojo. He is a character whose presence was expanded for the 1996 anime adaptation, as in the original manga his surname is mentioned but his given name, Gensai, was never revealed. This name, however, was also used for his appearance in the 2023 remake of the series.
In terms of background, Gensai is a longtime friend of the Kamiya family and knew Kaoru's father, Koshijiro Kamiya. Following Koshijiro's disappearance, he took on the role of a guardian for Kaoru, effectively becoming a paternal grandfather figure to her and supporting her both physically and emotionally. He is frequently seen in the company of his two young granddaughters, Ayame and Suzume, who are original characters created for the 1996 anime.
Gensai's personality is amicable and grandfatherly, always ready to provide medical aid in times of need or to join in celebrations during peaceful times. He cares deeply about his patients and his community, and his sharp observational skills sometimes make him a useful source of information regarding the events surrounding the main characters. While generally good-natured, his patience has limits, as he can show annoyance towards the brash Sanosuke and exasperation with his assistant Megumi's rare lapses in judgment. One notable and more lighthearted aspect of his character is a lascivious side, initially behaving in a lecherous and frivolous manner toward his new assistant, Megumi, such as patting her rear. This trait was more subdued or removed in the 1996 anime adaptation, which instead increased his role as a paternal figure to Kaoru and added scenes where he is dragged into various troublesome situations.
Gensai's primary motivation is the health and well-being of those in his care. He serves as the exclusive chief physician for the Kamiya dojo and is called upon whenever a member or ally of the group requires medical attention. His role in the story is predominantly a supporting one, acting as a healer, a source of wisdom, and a pillar of the community. In the 1996 anime, this role is significantly expanded; he appears from the first episode and has a thirty-year history with the Kamiya Dojo. He is shown treating the wounded after battles and even comforting his inconsolable granddaughters on his lap, hoping for Kenshin's safe return during the Kyoto Arc. He also demonstrates detailed knowledge of historical groups like the Sekihōtai.
Key relationships define his place in the story. With Kamiya Kaoru, he is a close family friend and a trusted guardian who frequently visits the dojo to check on her. With Takani Megumi, his relationship is professional and paternal. He was acquainted with the corrupt doctor for whom Megumi previously worked, which is how he came to know of her. After she is rescued, he hires her as his assistant at his clinic, providing her with a legitimate and honorable profession. His most cherished personal relationships are with his granddaughters, Ayame and Suzume, whom he considers his treasures. The 1996 anime also introduces his younger sister, Hana, who is physically identical to him and lives in the Izu region.
Regarding development, Gensai remains a consistent character, embodying stability and care. His most notable change is the initial shift in his behavior towards Megumi, moving from a lusty attitude to a consistently serious and professional demeanor. His abilities are strictly non-combat; while he possesses no fighting skills, he is a highly capable and experienced doctor.
