Description
Catan is a high-ranking angel known as a Cherubim in the manga Angel Sanctuary. His origins, however, begin in the lowest caste of angelic society. He was originally a Grigori, an angel of the lowest order, without a proper body and facing the end of his existence. His salvation came from Rosiel, an inorganic angel of immense power and beauty, who granted him a new body. This act of pure grace transformed Catan’s existence and forged an unbreakable bond of profound love and devotion to his savior.

Driven by a desire to be worthy of the miracle Rosiel bestowed upon him, Catan dedicated himself to climbing the rigid hierarchy of Heaven. He rose through the ranks step by step, ultimately achieving the prestigious status of Cherubim. His primary motivation for this relentless ascent was not ambition or power, but a singular, heartfelt goal: to be able to stand by Rosiel’s side once more. Catan’s entire identity and purpose are centered on his master, to whom he is completely and selflessly devoted. This devotion is the core of his character, defining his actions, his role in the story, and his ultimate fate.

A key architect of the plot, Catan is responsible for initiating the Angel Sanctuary project. This involved creating a computer game that spread through the human world, designed to harvest the psychic energy of its players. His aim was to gather enough spiritual power to break the powerful seal that Alexiel, Rosiel’s twin sister, had placed on his master, imprisoning him. This act of resurrecting Rosiel was not born of malice but from a desperate hope that his master would return to reclaim Heaven and end what Catan saw as a corrupt dictatorship. However, upon being freed, Rosiel’s sanity had deteriorated further, and his obsession was no longer with justice but solely with his sister, Alexiel, and her acknowledgement of his beauty. This created a painful conflict for Catan, whose sense of justice often clashed with his unwavering loyalty to Rosiel, though his loyalty ultimately always won. He was willing to sacrifice innocent human lives for his cause, and considered himself already damned, which only steeled his resolve to continue on his chosen path regardless of the consequences.

Catan’s most significant relationship is with Rosiel, a connection that is complex and deeply ambiguous. Catan is often described as loving Rosiel with a pure and true love, seeing him as his creator and purpose. While Rosiel is narcissistic and obsessed with his own beauty and with Alexiel, he also shows a subconscious recognition of Catan’s unique importance, at times deliberately trying to be cruel to drive Catan away for his own protection. Despite these cruelties and the clear moral decay of his master, Catan remains steadfast, unable to leave Rosiel’s side. This loyalty is tested to its breaking point when Rosiel, in the height of his insanity, kills Catan. Even as he died, Catan’s final thoughts were not of his own suffering but of Rosiel’s anguish. In a final act of tragic complexity, after Rosiel’s own death, their spirits are ultimately reunited.

Physically, Catan is depicted with white hair and brown eyes, possessing tall, white bird-like wings, characteristic of his angelic station. As a Cherubim, he is a being of significant magical power and authority. However, his most notable abilities are not for combat but for elaborate planning and manipulation. He masterminded the Angel Sanctuary computer game, a large-scale magical operation to drain spiritual energy from countless humans across an entire city. This demonstrates a high level of skill in constructing complex magical systems to achieve his goals. His personal journey also shows a remarkable will and capacity for change, evolving from a bodiless Grigori into one of the most powerful ranks of angels, a testament to the strength of his devotion.
