Description
Kakugari, also known by his nickname which means crew cut, is one of Ataru Moroboshi's friends and classmates. His real name is Hiroyuki. He is a prominent member of Lum's Stormtroopers, the group of boys who are fanatically devoted to the alien princess.
Physically, Kakugari is the largest and most stout member of the Stormtroopers, easily towering over his peers with a muscular build. He is always seen sporting his signature crew cut hairstyle. When his face is shown close-up, he may occasionally be drawn with freckles.
Among the Stormtroopers, Kakugari functions as the main muscle and enforcer. He acts as a guard for the group's leader, Megane, using his larger build to handle most physical tasks. True to this role, he has a temperamental and ill-tempered personality, making him willing to bully others on the group's behalf. His favorite targets for this bullying are Ataru and his fellow trooper Chibi, who is the most frequent victim of his choke-holds and aggression.
Like the rest of the Stormtroopers, Kakugari is completely obsessed with Lum. His motivations are driven by a desire to split her and Ataru up, believing this will give the group a chance to win her affection. However, their shared obsession is deeply unstable. Whenever it seems one of them might succeed with Lum, they do not hesitate to turn on each other, backstabbing and pummeling their friends to claim Lum for themselves. Outside of their fanatical devotion to Lum, Kakugari and his friends engage in typical otaku culture, often enjoying science fiction, books, manga, anime, and films together.
In terms of relationships, Kakugari seems closest to Chibi among the Stormtroopers, though their friendship is far from stable and is defined by Kakugari's bullying. He is otherwise a loyal, if opportunistic, member of the group. Despite his imposing physique, he is often of little practical use and spends as much time fleeing from danger alongside his fellow troopers as he does confronting it.
Within the story, Kakugari serves as part of the recurring comedic ensemble that opposes Ataru and idolizes Lum. The character's role differs between the manga and anime adaptations. In the manga, Kakugari and his fellow Stormtroopers disappeared early on, with their roles often shared by other side characters.
