Description
Kaito is a student at the prestigious Meiou Academy, where he is a classmate and academic rival of Shuichi Minamino, the human identity of the fox demon Kurama. Kaito possesses a serious and extremely intelligent disposition. He initially presents himself as an intellectual snob with a mocking and arrogant tone, a demeanor that hides a deep-seated envy of Kurama's superior intellect. Despite this envy, which he makes no attempt to conceal, he does not allow it to consume him. After aligning himself with the main group, he becomes marginally more friendly and demonstrates a genuine willingness to help his allies, though his naturally dour and snobbish personality remains. He is known to be highly skilled at and interested in video games, once playing for thirty-six hours straight to beat a high score.

Kaito is introduced at the start of the Chapter Black Saga as one of the psychics who captures Yusuke Urameshi. He is the first of the so-called "New Recruits" to challenge Yusuke's friends, using his unique territory to trap them in a battle of wits. He creates a game where speaking a forbidden word, such as "hot," results in the speaker's soul being stolen and their body becoming petrified. After capturing the souls of Hiei, Kuwabara, and Botan, he engages in a more complex linguistic duel with Kurama. The rules are escalated to forbid entire letters of the alphabet. Despite Kurama stacking the odds in Kaito's favor, Kaito is ultimately defeated when Kurama triggers an unexpected laugh from him, causing him to speak a taboo sound and lose his own soul. It is later revealed that the entire hostage situation was a test orchestrated by Genkai, and Kaito's soul is restored. He then formally joins the team as an ally. Later in the saga, Kaito uses his formidable memory to compete against the Gamemaster in a trivia game called Battle Quiz inside the territory of Goblin City. He has memorized all seventeen thousand questions, but is still outmatched by the Gamemaster's even greater ability to anticipate the quiz's pattern.

Kaito's primary relationship is with Kurama, whom he views as his perennial rival and a benchmark for his own intelligence. This rivalry is a mix of respect and jealousy, and he deeply desires to defeat Kurama intellectually, even treating their dangerous game as a genuine opportunity to do so. While he is acquainted with the other members of Yusuke's team, his most significant bonds are with his fellow psychics, Mitsunari Yanagisawa and Asato Kido, with whom he is initially allied. In the Three Kings Saga, Kaito is the only one of these three who maintains contact with Kurama, offering his assistance upon learning that Kurama is facing personal troubles, though Kurama silently declines the offer.

Kaito's development sees him transition from a primary antagonist to a supportive secondary character. Though he was playing along with Genkai's test, he confesses that he truly tried his hardest to defeat Kurama, indicating a deep-seated personal desire for that victory. In the epilogue of the manga, he is last seen working as a writer, living with a young woman who acts as his editor and is implied to be his girlfriend.

Kaito's abilities are tied to his powerful psychic territory. Within a ten-meter radius, he can enforce absolute rules that rewrite reality. His most prominent ability is the Taboo of Speech, which allows him to remove specific words or letters from the alphabet, causing anyone who speaks them to lose their soul. This power is based on the concept of kotodama, the belief that mystical powers dwell in words. He is also able to use a Taboo of Aggression, which creates an impenetrable barrier that blocks any act of violence within his territory, rendering raw physical power useless. This makes him an extraordinarily dangerous opponent despite his human and D-Class spirit energy level, with his psychic power alone being considered an A-Class threat. However, these rules apply to Kaito himself; if he speaks a taboo word or commits an act of aggression, he will also lose his soul or be blocked, placing a significant risk on his own abilities.
