Description
Kaname Hagiri, also known by the epithet Sniper, is a character who appears during the Chapter Black arc. He is a seventeen-year-old high school student who becomes a member of the Sensui Seven, a group of psychics assembled by the primary antagonist of that story arc. His introduction occurs after the barrier between the human and demon worlds is breached, an event that awakens latent psychic abilities in certain humans. Hagiri is visually characterized by his long black hair, violet or magenta eyes, and a red leather jacket, often seen riding his motorcycle. His design is noted to be reminiscent of a "bad boy" archetype and has been compared to characters from other works, such as Kaneda from Akira.

Hagiri's background reveals a troubled family life that shapes his worldview. His father was a police officer who was exemplary in his public duty but was a violent and alcoholic figure at home, an individual Hagiri both revered and despised. His father had died in the line of duty two years prior to the events of the story. He lives with his mother, an older brother, and a younger sister. This past contributes to his cold and nihilistic personality, and it is later speculated that his psychic abilities manifested from a deep-seated desire to judge villains who escape the reach of the law. Despite his ruthless demeanor, he is shown to care for his family and even demonstrates a soft spot for small animals, as he later investigates the killing of a stray kitten after his sister brings it to his attention.

In terms of personality, Hagiri is typically stoic, reserved, and arrogant, possessing a cynical view of the world and the people around him, whom he generally considers to be foolish. He is reckless and cocky in his abilities, often toying with his opponents from a distance. Unlike other members of the Sensui Seven who hold a specific grudge against humanity, Hagiri's motivations are rooted in a more general disillusionment and boredom with everyday life. He obeys Sensui's orders without question, appearing easily manipulated, but is ultimately one of the few members who does not care about the group's ultimate goal or the contents of the Chapter Black tape.

His role in the story is as a formidable antagonist who primarily engages in ranged combat against the protagonist, Yusuke Urameshi. He is introduced when he snipes a psychic named Shigeru Murota who had read Sensui's mind. He later confronts Yusuke and his friends, using his abilities to force them into a street battle. The key relationship defining his role is with Yusuke, whom he engages in a long-distance sniper duel. He also acts under the direction of Shinobu Sensui, serving as a loyal operative. After his defeat at the hands of Hiei, he is shown interacting with another member of the Sensui Seven, the Doctor (Minoru Kamiya), who saves his life and notes that Hiei deliberately missed his vital organs, suggesting an unintentional mercy.

Kaname Hagiri's development occurs after his defeat and the conclusion of the Sensui Seven's plot. He does not die from his injuries and is rescued by Kamiya. Following the events, he returns to a normal life, stating his intent to eat normally and attend school. He does not become an ally of Yusuke's team, but neither does he continue his villainous activities. His post-story actions show a shift in focus; he is seen with his sister, hunting down three of his classmates who cruelly killed a stray cat, vowing to make them know what it is like to be hunted. According to the manga, he later disappears after graduating high school but is mentioned to have sent a significant sum of money to his mother.

Hagiri's notable abilities center on his power as a psychic sniper. His primary technique allows him to imbue any object with spirit energy and propel it with telekinesis, effectively turning anything from a blade of grass to a die into a bullet. Genkai estimates his effective shooting range to be over 500 meters. He can also control the density, weight, and speed of his projectiles, allowing light objects to pierce concrete or heavier objects like vehicles to be used as devastating ammunition. His most powerful technique is named Death Print Bull's Eye. Within a territory of approximately 200 meters, he can imprint mark-like targets on an opponent's body. After this mark is set, any projectile he launches will become a homing weapon that relentlessly pursues the target, allowing him to fire blindly and still achieve a hit. While his raw spirit energy is considered C-class, the sheer lethality and unique nature of his abilities classify him as an A-class threat. Despite his long-range power, his close-quarters combat ability is limited and his arrogance can be a weakness.
