Description
In the context of the anime Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files, the name Alfred refers to the character Kazuma Kuwabara, as he is called in the Filipino dub of the series. Kuwabara is one of the main protagonists and is initially introduced as a rival to the series' hero, Yusuke Urameshi. He is a student at Sarayashiki Junior High School and is known for being one of the toughest delinquents in the area, second only to Yusuke himself.
Kuwabara has a very distinctive and boisterous personality. He is famously hot-headed, stubborn, and not particularly intelligent, often acting before he thinks. Despite his tough exterior and reputation as a street brawler, he possesses a strong and unwavering sense of honor and justice. He is deeply loyal to his friends and is driven by a powerful emotional core, which makes him far more sensitive and sentimental than he would ever care to admit. He also has a comical and exaggerated side, frequently overreacting to situations and providing much of the series' comic relief through his antics and his one-sided, chivalrous devotion to the ice apparition Yukina.
His primary motivation shifts over the course of the story. Initially, he is obsessed with beating Yusuke in a fight to prove his own strength. However, as they face greater supernatural threats, their rivalry transforms into a deep and abiding friendship. He becomes driven to protect innocent people, especially Yukina, for whom he harbors deep feelings. He also seeks to prove himself as a capable fighter and a worthy member of Yusuke's team, often struggling with feelings of inadequacy when compared to his more powerful allies. In the story, Kuwabara serves as Yusuke's first and most loyal human ally. While Yusuke is the appointed Spirit Detective, Kuwabara functions as his steadfast partner, frequently accompanying him on dangerous missions assigned by Spirit World. He is an essential member of the core group of four fighters, which also includes the demons Kurama and Hiei.
Kuwabara's most significant relationship is with Yusuke Urameshi. They begin as bitter schoolyard rivals but grow to become best friends who would risk their lives for each other without hesitation. He also shares a close bond with his older sister, Shizuru Kuwabara, who often acts as the voice of reason and a source of tough love, keeping his ego in check. His infatuation with Yukina is a major driving force for him, as he vows to protect her and win her affection, though he remains largely unaware of her true nature as a demon for a long time. Throughout the series, Kuwabara undergoes significant development. He evolves from a simple-minded punk into a mature and reliable young man. He learns to channel his raw spiritual energy with greater control and gains a deeper understanding of what it means to be a true fighter, valuing the protection of others over his own pride. By later story arcs, he shows a level of emotional intelligence and a reluctance to engage in pointless violence, demonstrating a clear departure from his purely combative early days.
As for his notable abilities, Kuwabara is a spiritually aware human who can manipulate his own life force, or spirit energy. His signature technique is the Spirit Sword, which allows him to manifest a blade of pure spiritual energy from his hand. As he grows stronger, he learns to extend and shape this energy, creating weapons such as a Spirit Axe and a Spirit Whip. His fighting style is reckless and relies heavily on his raw power, endurance, and tenacity. While he lacks the refined skill of his teammates, his immense willpower and resilience allow him to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds.
