Description
Kaolla Su is a fictional character from the manga and anime series Love Hina. She is a young girl, approximately thirteen years old at the beginning of the story, who resides in room 301 of the Hinata Inn. Her full name follows a western naming order, with Su as her family name, though the other residents of the inn rarely observe this convention. She hails from the fictional South Pacific island nation of Molmol, a kingdom located near the International Date Line, and is later revealed to be its princess.
Kaolla Su is defined foremost by her extraordinary hyperactivity and boundless energy. She is constantly in motion, often greeting other residents with enthusiastic hugs or, in the case of the hapless innkeeper Keitaro Urashima, a powerful kick to the face. Her behavior is highly impulsive and driven by immediate desires, chief among them an insatiable appetite. She is frequently seen eating bananas, her favorite food, and is known to ask about almost anything new she encounters, questioning whether it is edible. This curiosity extends to Tama-chan, the inn's pet turtle, whom Su makes numerous comical and failed attempts to cook and eat. Her room at the inn reflects her wild and unconventional nature, having been remodeled to resemble the dense rainforests of her homeland, complete with a pond that connects to the hot springs.
Despite her cheerful and seemingly carefree exterior, her motivations are rooted in a deep-seated fear of change and a strong attachment to the Hinata Inn as her true home. Having fled Molmol to escape an arranged marriage to her own brother, she found a new family and a sense of belonging at Hinata House. Her enthusiasm for the status quo is such that she later devises a plan to kidnap Keitaro and transport the entire inn building to Molmol to ensure that nothing will ever change. Her long-term ambition is to return to her homeland and found a computing school, transforming it into a technological superpower capable of rivaling, and even conquering, Japan.
Within the story, Kaolla serves as a chaotic but ultimately endearing wildcard. Her peculiar customs and relentless energy often drive the plot into absurd directions, primarily through her many technological inventions. She is a mechanical prodigy and a self-taught genius, capable of building complex devices from scrap, including giant turtle-shaped mecha called the Mecha Tama-chan series, various tracking radars, stealth suits, and even functional missiles. Her inventions are typically built for a specific, often humorous purpose, such as capturing Tama-chan or spying on other residents, and they are prone to going haywire.
Her key relationships are defined by her unique personality. She shares a deep bond with Motoko Aoyama, the athletic swordswoman who is one of the few people with enough stamina to keep up with her. Su is fond of hugging and snuggling Motoko, and she claims her as her first kiss, much to Motoko's embarrassment. She also finds a perfect partner in mischief with Sarah MacDougal, a younger American girl who comes to stay at the inn, and the two are often seen exploring secret passages or teaming up to torment Keitaro. Her relationship with Keitaro is complex. Although she frequently uses him as a test subject for her inventions or as a target for her wild greetings, she holds a deep affection for him because he strongly resembles her older brother (actually her cousin), Lamba Lu, whom she left behind in Molmol. In her own way, she comes to care for Keitaro as much as, and perhaps even more than, her biological family.
Kaolla Su possesses one notable supernatural ability tied to her homeland. On a single night every year, or whenever a red moon appears, she transforms into an older, more mature, and extremely beautiful version of herself. In this adult form, which lasts only for a brief period, her feelings are more pronounced, and she has openly expressed a romantic love for Keitaro, even proclaiming herself his girlfriend. Her development across the long narrative, which spans several years, sees her gradually mature. Despite her childish antics, she grows up and, in the epilogue set years later, is shown to have successfully enrolled in Tokyo University as a law student, a testament to her underlying intelligence and capability.
