Noriyasu Seta is a supporting character in Love Hina. He is a graduate of Tokyo University and works there as an archaeology professor, a profession that often takes him on international expeditions. His appearance and adventurous demeanor are a clear parody of Indiana Jones. Like the protagonist Keitaro Urashima, Seta was once a third-year ronin, meaning he spent multiple years preparing for the university entrance exams before finally passing.

Seta’s personality is generally happy-go-lucky, gullible, and sometimes clueless. He is the tallest member of the cast and is almost always seen in a white lab coat, often sporting a tan from his outdoor excavations and wearing glasses due to poor eyesight. Despite his academic credentials, he is clumsy, especially around women, and is a notoriously terrible driver; his arrival is frequently heralded by his van crashing down from the sky in an improbable manner. This recklessness extends to a complete lack of self-preservation, which paradoxically makes him an exceptionally skilled martial artist—a master of Jeet Kune Do whose combat abilities are said to rival those of Tsuruko Aoyama, the strongest practitioner of the Shinmei-ryu style.

Seta’s primary motivation is a deep passion for archaeology and a relentless desire for adventure. He is driven by curiosity and the thrill of discovery, which often leads him to travel the world and pursue dangerous excavations. This love of freedom and exploration previously caused the end of a romantic relationship with Haruka Urashima, Keitaro’s aunt and the manager of the Hinata House dormitory; the two were childhood friends and once close, but Seta chose his career over settling down, though they still share a mutual, affectionate respect.

In the story, Seta serves as a mentor and foil to Keitaro. He first appears as a mysterious figure who offers Keitaro guidance and later hires him as a research assistant. Through this work, Seta instills in Keitaro a dream of becoming an archaeologist, eventually inspiring Keitaro to study overseas with him after Keitaro’s accident at the university opening ceremony. Seta also acted as a tutor to Naru Narusegawa before the series began, and she harbors an unrequited crush on him for part of the story. He is a friend to all the residents of Hinata House and frequently visits, bringing chaos and comic relief with his wild driving and absent-mindedness.

Seta’s development is minimal; he remains a consistently enthusiastic, reckless, and capable figure throughout the series. His most notable abilities, aside from his archaeological expertise, include his extraordinary martial arts prowess, his terrifying driving skills, and a knack for surviving situations that would harm anyone else. He is a catalyst for Keitaro’s growth and a reminder of the adventurous life that can follow academic success.
