Description
Obotchaman is an android character from the anime Dr. Slump & Arale-chan, created by the recurring antagonist Dr. Mashirito. He was constructed using the design plans for the heroine Arale Norimaki, but was built as a male version of the same robot model. Dr. Mashirito initially designated him Caramelman No. 4, and he was introduced later in the series as a weapon intended to destroy Arale and help his creator conquer the world. His mission did not go according to plan, however, because he found Arale too charming and never saw her as a genuine enemy. After several failed attempts to fight her, he decided to become her friend instead, turning away from his creator and becoming a regular part of life in the village. Despite his late introduction, he quickly grew into one of the most important characters in the story.
In appearance, Obotchaman resembles a thirteen-year-old boy and stands about the same height as Arale. He has large blue eyes without visible pupils and short black hair with two pointed tufts that resemble a devil's horns. His behavior contrasts sharply with his somewhat mischievous design, as he is extremely polite, well-mannered, and formal in speech, often referring to himself with the dignified pronoun watakushi. He has a strong sense of justice and is widely regarded as one of the most sensible and level-headed characters in the series. This does not mean he is entirely without flaws; he has a pronounced tendency toward elaborate fantasies and daydreams that can carry him away, and he can be naive and awkward in certain situations.
His most defining personal trait is his deep affection for Arale. He is genuinely in love with her, finding her cute and charming, and he becomes sentimental and even a little dramatic when expressing his adoration. At the same time, he is too shy to openly confess his feelings around her, which leads to much of his awkwardness. Arale, for her part, affectionately calls him Obotchiman-kun and treats him warmly, and their bond becomes a central element of the later part of the story.
