Description
Prince Milo is the name given to the character Asbel in the 1985 English-language release of the animated film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, a version in which several characters received different names. Under either name, the figure is the prince of the city-state of Pejite, a workshop city known for its mechanical craftsmanship, and the twin brother of Princess Lastelle. As the son of the mayor of Pejite, he belongs to the ruling family of a small state caught between the ambitions of the larger Tolmekian empire. When Tolmekian forces under Princess Kushana invade Pejite to seize a dormant God Warrior discovered beneath the city, his home is destroyed and his sister is taken prisoner, events that set his personal story in motion.
In personality, Milo is brave, impulsive, and fiercely loyal to his family and people. He is a skilled pilot and a capable mechanic, comfortable with the machines and aircraft of his homeland. At the start of the story he is driven primarily by grief and anger, nursing a burning desire for revenge against Tolmekia and harboring a deep hatred for the toxic jungle and its giant insects, which he blames for his sister's fate. He attacks a Tolmekian airship fleet alone in a gunship, an act of youthful recklessness that leads to his being shot down into the Sea of Corruption, where he first encounters Nausicaä. His early motivations are personal: avenging his sister, punishing his enemies, and restoring the honor of Pejite.
His role in the story expands after this meeting. Surviving together in the toxic jungle, Milo and Nausicaä form a bond of mutual trust, and he repairs and helps pilot her glider, using his mechanical expertise to keep her mobile. He accompanies her back to the Valley of the Wind and plays a supporting part in her efforts to prevent the valley's destruction, including the attempt to return an Ohmu larva to the rampaging insect herd and end the crisis threatening both the valley and the Tolmekian forces. Where he once viewed Nausicaä's compassion as naive, he comes to respect her judgment and follows her lead. His relationship with her is the central friendship of his arc, one that tempers his vengefulness and opens the possibility of reconciliation with former enemies.
Milo's key relationships include his twin sister Lastelle, whose dying wish shapes the early conflict and whose memory fuels his hatred until he learns the fuller truth; his father, the mayor of Pejite, who is consumed by his own desire for vengeance and willing to sacrifice the Valley of the Wind for it; and his mother, who shows sympathy for Nausicaä and helps her escape. Through Nausicaä he also gains the respect of older allies in the wider struggle, and in the expanded manga storyline he travels with the swordsman Yupa Miralda and grows into a more seasoned and principled figure.
His development follows a clear trajectory from a hot-headed survivor consumed by rage to a more mature young man who understands that the survival of the wider world matters more than national grudges. He abandons his suicidal plans for revenge, chooses to protect others rather than destroy, and becomes a dependable ally rather than a lone avenger. Notably, he proves willing to set aside his hatred even toward those who destroyed his home when the greater good demands it. His most notable abilities are his combat flying, his talent for repairing and improvising with machinery, and his resilience under extreme circumstances, though his most significant strength is the capacity to change his beliefs through the influence of those he trusts.
