Description
Nero, whose full designation is Nrvnqsr Chaos, is a primary antagonist in the anime Lunar Legend Tsukihime. He is the tenth of the twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors, a classification of immensely powerful vampires. Originally an alchemist named Fabro Rowan from the Sea of Estray, a cluster of sorcerer organizations in northern Europe, he sought immortality through a method that involved absorbing and merging his existence with the lives of other creatures. Over a period of more than a millennium, he integrated 666 distinct beasts into his own body, turning himself into a living mass of chaotic matter analogous to a primordial sea. The Church gave him the name Nrvnqsr, which is phonetically spelled Nero and is a gematria reference to the number of the beast, 666.

In terms of personality and motivations, Nero is characterized by a detached and clinical approach to his actions. He does not require blood like typical vampires; rather, he functions as an assassin who destroys his victims entirely, consuming their flesh, blood, and bones through the beasts he harbors within him. His consciousness is slowly fading as he becomes more united with the chaotic mass of lives he has accumulated. Despite this, his ultimate desire is to come to understand the very chaos that now constitutes his being, even if it means being completely swallowed by it. This philosophical drive underpins his seemingly cold and relentless demeanor.

Within the story of Lunar Legend Tsukihime, Nero serves as one of the early major adversaries. He is the first Dead Apostle encountered by the protagonist Shiki Tohno alongside the vampire princess Arcueid Brunestud. Nero is responsible for a massacre at the Hotel Century, where Shiki and Arcueid are waiting for him. However, it is clarified that he is not the sole perpetrator behind the series of vampiric murders plaguing the city; that role belongs to another Dead Apostle named Roa. Nero's primary function in the narrative is to demonstrate the threat posed by high-ranking Dead Apostles and to showcase the nature of Shiki's special ability to perceive and cut lines of death.

Nero's key relationships are primarily adversarial. He clashes directly with Shiki Tohno, whose Mystic Eyes of Death Perception allow him to see the lines of death on all things, including Nero's chaotic body. Arcueid Brunestud also pursues him as a target, as she is hunting rogue Dead Apostles. Nero has no significant allies in the anime; he acts alone as an obedient killer.

Character development in the anime is minimal, as Nero remains a consistent, unwavering force of chaos. He does not undergo a transformation in personality or goals; his role is that of an obstacle to be overcome.

Nero's notable abilities center around his body containing 666 different creatures, ranging from ordinary animals like wolves and ravens to mythological beings such as unicorns. He can summon these beasts at will to attack, devour, and overwhelm his enemies. Because his entire form is a collection of lives, conventional attacks are largely ineffective against him; he can rapidly regenerate or reform by drawing on his internal menagerie. This makes him an exceptionally difficult opponent, requiring Shiki to identify and cut the specific line of death that governs Nero's entire chaotic existence in order to defeat him. His power is emblematic of his identity as a living embodiment of primordial chaos.
