Description
Dark Mouse, often referred to simply as Dark, is a central figure in D.N.Angel, known as the legendary phantom thief. He is not an ordinary human but rather a magical entity, described as the Black Wings, a living artwork created by the Hikari family that was split into two separate beings. Dark is the half that was bound to the Niwa family line, while his counterpart, Krad, was bound to the Hikari family. For three hundred years, Dark has manifested exclusively in the first male child of each Niwa generation once that child turns fourteen and experiences the feeling of being in love. Before emerging in the series' protagonist, Daisuke Niwa, Dark had lain dormant for forty years because the previous host had only a daughter.
Physically, Dark appears as a tall, confident seventeen-year-old with a handsome Italianate appearance, characterized by long dark hair and matching eyes. He lacks a physical body of his own and exists as a spiritual entity, which makes him functionally immortal but also means he cannot live independently. His existence depends on his host, and when he takes control, Daisuke physically transforms into Dark’s form. While his wings are a signature part of his appearance, using his true wings causes great harm to his host’s body; therefore, he primarily uses Wiz, the family’s pet-like familiar, which transforms into his dark wings.
Dark’s personality stands in sharp contrast to that of his gentle and shy host, Daisuke. He is portrayed as candid, confident, and outwardly arrogant, with a notorious reputation as a playboy. He flirts shamelessly, often treating kisses as casual greetings rather than meaningful gestures. He delights in teasing Daisuke, mocking his inexperience, and taunting the police who try to capture him. However, beneath this flashy and carefree exterior lies a more complex figure. Because he has no permanent form and will outlive any human he cares for, Dark is described as a fundamentally lonely being who cannot truly experience reciprocal love. Despite their constant bickering, he genuinely cares for Daisuke’s well-being and safety, taking care not to overuse his magic and harm his host.
As a thief, Dark’s motivations are not personal gain but duty. He specifically targets cursed works of art created by the Hikari family, which possess dangerous magical properties. After stealing these pieces, the Niwa family seals them away to prevent them from causing harm. His role in the story is therefore that of a phantom thief who operates at night, guided by his family’s mission. The public knows him as Kaitou Dark, a legendary figure whose appearances are announced by elaborate warning letters.
Dark’s role is complicated by his relationships with others. He exists primarily through his bond with Daisuke Niwa, which evolves into a dynamic similar to that of an older and younger brother, where Dark often acts as a reluctant mentor and protector. His primary antagonist is Krad, his other half, who manifests from his rival, Satoshi Hiwatari. Krad is obsessed with destroying Dark, leading to a long-standing supernatural conflict between them. In terms of romance, Dark’s feelings differ between adaptations. In the anime, he is haunted by his past love for Rika Harada, the grandmother of twin sisters Risa and Riku. He initially entertains the affections of Risa because she reminds him of her grandmother, but ultimately rejects her. In the manga, his affections shift towards the more athletic twin, Riku Harada.
Throughout the narrative, Dark shows notable development, particularly concerning his understanding of his own existence and his relationship with his host. He begins as a being resigned to his eternal, lonely fate but gradually demonstrates a willingness to sacrifice himself. At the conclusion of the anime series, Dark makes the definitive choice to seal himself and Krad back into the original artwork from which they were born, effectively ending his own existence to protect others.
Dark possesses a range of notable abilities derived from his nature as a magical entity. He controls ancient magic, typically channeling his power through black feathers from his wings to cast spells, create barriers, or perform energy attacks. Beyond raw magic, his centuries of experience as a phantom thief grant him extraordinary skills in lock-picking, escapology, and disguise. His most iconic power is his flight, enabled by Wiz transforming into his black wings. This partnership allows him to soar through the cityscape during his heists, solidifying his legendary reputation as the Black Wings.
