Description
Dark is the legendary phantom thief from the series D.N.Angel, a being of magic and mystery bound to the bloodline of the Niwa family. He is not a separate person who transforms but rather an entity that resides within the male heirs of the Niwa line, emerging under specific conditions. For generations, Dark's existence has been passed down like a genetic curse, lying dormant for forty years before the story begins, when he awakens within the body of his new host, a fourteen-year-old boy named Daisuke Niwa. The trigger for his manifestation is the host experiencing romantic feelings; when Daisuke's heart races due to thoughts of someone he loves, his body transforms into Dark. Externally, Dark appears as a tall, handsome Italian-looking young man, though his true age is measured in centuries, having existed for hundreds of years as a spiritual entity bound to the family. His public persona is that of Kaitou Dark, a sophisticated and skilled thief famous for sending advance notice of his heists before successfully stealing his targets.
The core of Dark's personality is a study in contradictions. On the surface, he is confident, playful, and something of a charming scoundrel. He is notoriously flirtatious, treating amorous attention as a form of entertainment and often shamelessly wooing women without any serious commitment. Beneath this cavalier exterior, however, lies a more complex and melancholic figure. Dark is acutely aware of his own nature as an immortal, non-human entity, and this knowledge fuels a profound loneliness. He has no true physical body of his own and his existence is dependent on his host, a condition that he believes makes him incapable of experiencing or deserving genuine love—he even refers to himself as a monster. This self-perception creates a deep chasm between his outward bravado and his internal self-loathing. He can be manipulative and ruthless, with a possessive streak, treating his host and the people he cares about as his belongings. When provoked, as seen during the Argentine incident, this darker side emerges as a cold and vicious fury, dispensing with mercy in favor of retribution.
Dark's primary motivation is a deep-seated desire for freedom and a tangible, human existence. His ultimate, unspoken goal is to gain a body of his own, to live a real life, and to experience genuine human emotions and relationships without the barrier of his ethereal nature. This personal longing intertwines with his functional role in the story: he is the instrument of the Niwa family, tasked with stealing specific, cursed works of art created by the rival Hikari family. These pieces are not ordinary valuables but are often sentient, holding dangerous magical properties, and the Niwas' mission is to capture and seal them away. His eternal mission is directly opposed by his nemesis, Krad, a being of light who is the other half of the original magical artwork from which Dark was split. While Dark resides in the Niwa bloodline, Krad lives within the Hikari family, specifically within Daisuke's classmate and police commander, Satoshi Hiwatari, leading to a deep, intrinsic conflict between the two.
The most significant and fraught relationship in Dark's existence is with his host, Daisuke Niwa. Their dynamic evolves from a strained partnership into a strong, brotherly bond. Dark frequently teases and belittles Daisuke for his youth and inexperience, yet he also protects his host's body, refusing to use his true black wings for flight because the magic would cause Daisuke serious harm, instead relying on a familiar named Wiz (or With) that transforms into wings. While Dark is possessive of Daisuke, seeing him as his territory, there is clear affection beneath the bickering. In parallel to Daisuke's romantic life, Dark develops his own attachments. In the manga, his affections shift from the tomboyish Riku Harada to her more feminine twin, Risa, as he struggles with whether he can allow himself to love a human girl when his own immortality makes a future together impossible. The anime adaptation alters this, portraying Dark as still carrying a torch for the sisters' grandmother from forty years prior, which drives much of his emotional conflict.
Dark's capabilities are extensive and largely magical. His most iconic ability is conjuring his enormous black wings, which serve as a source of power for attacks and defensive barriers. He typically performs magic using his own feathers as a medium, unleashing blasts of energy or casting sealing spells. His career as a legendary phantom thief has also granted him a suite of non-magical skills, including expert lock-picking, acrobatic agility, impressive physical strength, and masterful techniques of disguise and escape that seem almost supernatural in their effectiveness. As the series progresses, his character develops from a creature driven by selfish longing into one who understands the value of sacrifice and genuine connection, moving beyond his initial role as a mere thief to become a protector of those he has come to care for.
