Description
Daisuke Niwa is the fourteen-year-old protagonist of D.N.Angel. He is a student at Azumano Junior High who, at the beginning of the story, appears to be a typical and somewhat ordinary teenager. His life is turned upside down when he confesses his love to his classmate and long-time crush, Risa Harada, only to be rejected. This event triggers a unique genetic trait passed down through the male line of the Niwa family, causing him to transform into the legendary phantom thief known as Dark.

In terms of personality, Daisuke is kind-hearted, shy, and often clumsy, which stands in stark contrast to the confident and flamboyant nature of his alter ego, Dark. He is generally a gentle and caring individual who tries his best to stop Dark from performing risky or outlandish stunts, though his efforts are usually in vain. This fundamental sweetness and innocence is a core part of his character, making him someone who is immediately likable and easy to root for. Despite his unassuming demeanor, he possesses a strong will and a perceptive nature that others often underestimate.

Daisuke's primary motivation throughout the series is to navigate the complications of his double life. He is initially driven by his desire to win the affection of Risa Harada, but this goal becomes paradoxical because Risa, like many other girls, falls in love with his suave and mysterious alter ego, Dark. As the story progresses, his feelings shift towards Risa's older twin sister, Riku Harada, who is more tomboyish and outspoken, and who develops feelings for Daisuke himself rather than Dark. His struggle is not just romantic but also internal, as he must learn to coexist and share his body and life with Dark, a powerful entity he did not ask for.

His role in the story is to serve as the host for Dark, which is a family tradition and a burden he must bear. While Dark carries out the legendary heists of cursed Hikari family artwork, Daisuke is the everyday boy whose body and emotions are the catalyst for these events. He is the lens through which the audience experiences the series' central conflict: the ancient struggle between the Niwa family and the Hikari family, represented by Dark and his nemesis, Krad, who resides within Daisuke's classmate, Satoshi Hiwatari.

Key relationships define Daisuke's journey. His most significant relationship is with Dark. Though they constantly argue and are opposites in many ways, they share a body and a fate, and their dynamic evolves into that of bickering brothers who ultimately care for and protect each other. His relationship with Riku Harada is another cornerstone. As he falls for her, he finds someone who appreciates him for who he truly is, not for his glamorous alter ego, which becomes essential to his personal happiness. His friendship with the eccentric Takeshi Saehara, the son of a police inspector, provides a connection to a normal, supportive social life amidst the chaos. His family, particularly his energetic mother Emiko and his grandfather Daiki, are the ones who have trained him for this destiny, turning their home into a life-threatening obstacle course to hone his skills for thievery.

Daisuke undergoes notable development from a boy who is a passive victim of his family's curse to someone who actively takes control of his own feelings and identity. Initially, he transforms into Dark unwillingly, triggered by any feeling of love. Over time, he learns to manage his transformations and gains a better understanding of his own heart. A key part of his growth is moving on from his infatuation with Risa to discovering a more genuine, reciprocal love with Riku. This emotional journey is directly tied to his ability to resolve his condition, as the tradition dictates that Dark will disappear when his host finds true love. While he remains kind and somewhat clumsy, he becomes less whiny and more resolved as he faces the trials presented by the story.

Despite his ordinary appearance, Daisuke possesses several notable abilities thanks to a lifetime of training by his family. He is highly athletic and perceptive, capable of incredible feats of agility and acrobatics, such as jumping several times his own height. He is an expert at lock picking, able to bypass both traditional and electronic security systems, and is skilled at evading and disarming complex traps. These skills make him a capable thief in his own right, even when he is not transformed into Dark. However, his true passion lies not in stealing art, but in creating it; he is a talented artist who loves to paint, a hobby that aligns him more with the artistic Hikari family than his own lineage of thieves.
