Description
Dark Mousy is a central figure in the narrative of D.N.Angel, existing as a legendary phantom thief known to the public as Kaitou Dark. His origins are deeply rooted in a mystical and tragic past; he is one half of the Black Wings, a single, sentient work of art created by the Hikari family. When the artwork was damaged during a theft, its soul split into two opposing entities: Dark and his eternal nemesis, Krad. For over three hundred years, Dark has been passed down through the male line of the Niwa family, lying dormant within their bloodline until the conditions are right for his manifestation. This event occurs when a Niwa male reaches the age of fourteen and experiences the pangs of romantic love, at which point his body transforms into the seventeen-year-old form of Dark. Prior to the main story, Dark had been absent for forty years because the previous potential host, Daiki Niwa, had only a daughter, making it impossible for him to appear.

In terms of appearance, Dark is strikingly handsome, possessing an exotic, perhaps Italian, look with long, layered violet hair and matching purple eyes. His attire, often designed by his host’s mother, is consistently black, featuring high-collared shirts, trousers, and optional capes and gloves, which reinforces his image as a stylish and enigmatic figure.

Dark’s personality is a blend of confident flamboyance and deep-seated melancholy. On the surface, he is candid, charming, and a notorious flirt, often appearing arrogant and teasing his young host, Daisuke Niwa, for his inexperience. He takes great pleasure in his heists, taunting the police and even his rivals with a playful demeanor. However, this facade conceals a more complex inner world. As a being without a physical body of his own, Dark is fundamentally lonely and yearns for a true existence. He is unable to experience lasting love because his form is not his own, leading to a sense of eternal solitude. While he is capable of being cold, manipulative, and even ruthless towards his enemies, he also demonstrates a genuine, if often hidden, capacity for care and compassion. This is particularly evident in his protective attitude towards his host, Daisuke, and the people he considers important, even as he chafes against the limitations of his existence.

Dark’s primary role in the story is that of a phantom thief who specializes in stealing cursed and magical works of art created by the Hikari family. This is not an act of simple larceny; the Niwa family, with Dark’s help, steals these dangerous pieces to seal them away and prevent them from causing further harm. His motivations are twofold. Superficially, he enjoys the thrill of the chase, the performance, and the fame. On a deeper level, his eternal quest is tied to his very nature: he seeks a way to become a complete, independent being, free from the need for a host. His existence is a constant struggle against his fate, and his actions are driven by a desire to break free from the curse that binds him.

Key relationships define much of his character arc. His most significant connection is with his host, Daisuke Niwa. Despite their constant bickering and Dark’s initial efforts to manipulate Daisuke into surrendering full control, they develop a deep bond similar to that of older and younger brothers. Dark is careful not to overtax Daisuke’s body with his full magical power and often risks himself to rescue his host. His relationship with love is complicated. In the anime adaptation, his heart was captured long ago by Rika Harada, the grandmother of twins Riku and Risa, a romance doomed by their incompatible natures. In the manga, his feelings evolve differently, initially showing an interest in the more level-headed twin, Riku, before gradually developing genuine affection for Risa, who persistently pursues him despite his protests. His counterpart, Krad, represents his other half and his greatest enemy, a being of light who resides within the Hikari family and with whom Dark is locked in an eternal, destructive conflict.

Throughout the narrative, Dark undergoes subtle but significant development. He begins as a more self-serving entity, focused on taking over Daisuke’s body to gain a life of his own. However, through his shared experiences with Daisuke and the affection he witnesses and receives, he begins to change. He becomes more selfless, sacrificing his own chances for freedom to protect his loved ones and moving from a stance of wanting to dominate his host to one of coexistence. He learns to care more openly, and his understanding of love evolves from a distant memory or a flirtatious game into a more profound, if still painful, emotion.

Dark possesses a range of notable abilities befitting a legendary thief and a magical entity. He is a master of illusion and sleep-inducing magic, typically using a single black feather from his wings as a medium for his spells. His physical capabilities are far beyond those of a normal human, granting him superhuman agility and acrobatic skills for infiltrating secure locations. He is also a genius at lock-picking and bypassing security systems. His most iconic ability is flight, but he rarely uses his own true black wings as doing so places immense strain on Daisuke’s body. Instead, he fuses with his faithful familiar, a small black rabbit-like creature named Wiz, which transforms into a pair of wings on his back.
