TV-Series
Description
Millerna Sara Aston is the third princess of the kingdom of Asturia in the anime The Vision of Escaflowne. She is the daughter of King Grava Aston and Queen Therese Aston, and she has two sisters: her eldest sister, Marlene, who is deceased and was the wife of Duke Freid and the mother of Allen Schezar's son Chid, and her second sister, Eries. At the start of the series, Millerna is recently betrothed to the merchant prince Dryden Fassa, a match arranged for political and economic reasons. She is unhappy with this arrangement because she is in love with Allen Schezar, a knight of Asturia, though her feelings are not returned in the same way.

In personality, Millerna is passionate, stubborn, and unafraid to pursue what she wants. She resists the burdens and traditions imposed on her by her royal lineage, and she is not as refined as people might expect of a princess; Dryden Fassa even remarks that she could be considered a tomboy. She is emotional and sometimes impulsive, and she has a caring and friendly nature that allows her to form close bonds with others, particularly with Hitomi Kanzaki.

Her motivations are shaped by a desire for personal freedom and a lost dream of becoming a doctor. She once studied medicine, but her sister Eries forced her to give up those studies. This loss contributes to her frustration with palace life and her longing to escape the expectations placed on her. Millerna runs away from Asturia to join Van's traveling group, hoping to fulfill her dreams and find a life of her own. Her motivation is a blend of romantic longing, especially for Allen, and a deeper desire for self-determination.

In the story, Millerna serves as a supporting character who accompanies the main group during part of their journey across Gaea. Her presence offers a perspective on love, duty, and the desire for independence. Her one-sided love for Allen contrasts with the more complicated romantic dynamics among the main characters, and her engagement to Dryden ties her to the political realities of Asturia. Although she is initially upset by the engagement, she gradually comes to appreciate Dryden's good qualities. By the end of the series, they separate on good terms, with Dryden telling her that he will return when he is more deserving of her. This parting leads Millerna to the realization that she cannot depend on others to make her happy, and that she must take responsibility for her own happiness.

Her key relationships include Allen Schezar, the object of her unrequited love; Dryden Fassa, her fiancé, whose character she learns to value; her sister Eries, who curtailed her medical ambitions; her deceased sister Marlene, whose history connects Millerna to Allen's past; and Hitomi Kanzaki, with whom she develops a genuine friendship. Through these relationships, Millerna grows from a frustrated princess caught between love and duty into a more self-aware young woman who understands that her future is her own to shape.

In terms of abilities, Millerna does not have combat skills or supernatural powers. Her notable qualities are her intelligence and her medical training, which she was prevented from completing, along with her resilience, stubbornness, and emotional honesty. Her development is primarily emotional and personal rather than physical, centering on her choice to define herself beyond the roles assigned to her.
