Description
Emperor Dornkirk, also known as Isaac, is the ruler of the Zaibach Empire and the primary antagonist of the story. His background is unique, as he was not originally from the world of Gaea. He was once a scientist from Earth, specifically a man named Isaac whose life and work are strongly implied to be that of Isaac Newton, the renowned physicist and mathematician. On Earth, his revolutionary work on gravity and physical laws led him to a deeper, more consuming question: the nature of fate and destiny. He became convinced that a fundamental, universal law governed all things, including the course of human lives. This obsession consumed his later years, and as he lay on his deathbed, his final wish was to understand the principle of fate. Instead of dying, he awoke on the world of Gaea, his wish to continue his research having been granted in an unexpected way.

Upon arriving in Gaea, Isaac found a primitive and chaotic land. Using his vast scientific knowledge from Earth, he transformed the small, barren country of Zaibach into a powerful, technologically advanced empire. He adopted the name Dornkirk and became its immortal emperor, his life extended far beyond a normal human span to approximately two hundred Earth years. He is not a warrior or a user of magic in the traditional sense, but his true power lies in his intellect. He is a genius-level scientist and engineer who created the technology for the Guymelefs, the massive armored suits that are the primary weapons of war on Gaea. His greatest creation, however, is the Fate Alteration Engine, also known as the Destiny Prognostication Engine, a colossal machine that allows him to peer into the future and, ultimately, to alter it.

Dornkirk's personality is defined by a cold, scientific dispassion. He is not motivated by a lust for power, wealth, or revenge, but by an abstract, almost philosophical goal. His motivation is to perfect his machine and recreate the legendary power of Atlantis, an ancient civilization that could turn thought into reality. His ultimate aim is to create what he calls the zone of absolute fortune, a future where there is no conflict, suffering, or uncertainty, and where every person's wishes are automatically fulfilled. He views the wars, invasions, and atrocities committed by his empire—including the destruction of Van's homeland, Fanelia—as necessary sacrifices for this greater, utopian good. He watches the slaughter caused by his final gambit with scientific detachment, seeing it as an inevitable result of a grand experiment rather than a tragedy.

In the story, Dornkirk serves as the overarching antagonist whose plans drive the central conflict. He is the unseen force behind the Zaibach Empire's campaign to conquer Gaea, seeking to secure the key components for his plan. These components are the power spot, a source of immense energy located beneath the kingdom of Fried, and Escaflowne itself, a legendary Guymelef from Atlantis. His role brings him into direct conflict with the protagonists, particularly Hitomi, whose own psychic powers of foresight interfere with his predictions, and Van, the pilot of Escaflowne. A crucial revelation occurs when Dornkirk realizes that it is the unique interaction between Hitomi and Van, working in tandem, that truly disrupts his ability to foresee and control fate.

Dornkirk's key relationships are largely defined by his grand plan. His most significant subordinate is Folken Fanel, Van's elder brother, who serves as the empire's chief strategist and believes in Dornkirk's vision of a future without uncertainty. Another notable creation in his orbit is Dilandau Albatou, a young, unstable pilot who is the result of a fate alteration experiment. His connection to the protagonists is more indirect. Allen Schezar learns that his father, Leon, once traveled with a man named Isaac, only to discover that this companion was none other than Emperor Dornkirk himself.

Throughout the narrative, Dornkirk undergoes little emotional development, remaining steadfast in his clinical pursuit. However, his role in the story develops as his plan nears completion. After being killed by Folken, who has turned against him, Dornkirk's death inadvertently acts as a dead man's switch, activating the zone of absolute fortune. In a ghostly form, he observes the results, which do not create peace but instead magnify the immediate, often violent, wishes of everyone, leading to chaos. This final act is the ultimate expression of his character: a man so devoted to a single, logical solution for the world's ills that he cannot see its fundamental flaw until it is too late. Despite being defeated, his legacy is the question of whether a world shaped by the unthinking fulfillment of desire is a utopia or a nightmare. His notable abilities remain rooted in intellect and machinery; he possesses no personal supernatural powers but commands technology that borders on godlike, allowing him to predict, and nearly control, the very fabric of destiny itself.
