Description
Patty Gatsby, known in the original Japanese version as Sanae Nakazawa, is one of the main characters of the Captain Tsubasa series. The name Patty Gatsby, sometimes expanded to Patricia Gatsby, is used in several international localizations of the anime and manga, while in Japan she is always called Sanae. She also carries the nickname Anego, meaning big sister, which reflects her role as a leader among her friends.

In terms of background, Sanae comes from Nankatsu, a city in Shizuoka Prefecture. She first meets the protagonist Tsubasa Ozora during their elementary school years, when he moves to the city. During this period she serves as the leader of the Nankatsu cheerleading squad, and in middle school she takes on the role of team manager. She is part of a close circle of friends and supporters who follow the local team through its various competitions.

Her personality changes noticeably over the course of the story. In her early appearances she is lively, energetic, outspoken, and somewhat tomboyish, with a hot temper that matches her position as the cheerleading captain. As she grows older she becomes calmer, sweeter, and more composed, developing into a dedicated and reliable team manager. Throughout both phases she remains someone who genuinely enjoys supporting people who give their best to achieve their goals and dreams.

Her main motivation is her strong devotion to Tsubasa. From the moment she first encounters him, she becomes his most enthusiastic supporter and gradually develops romantic feelings for him. Her love for him and her desire to see him succeed drive much of her involvement with the team. She supports him not only emotionally but also practically, helping to organize the cheerleading squad in elementary school and taking on managerial duties later.

Within the story she is the most prominent female character and Tsubasa's central love interest. She appears at almost every stage of his journey, from local elementary tournaments to the national level and beyond, always present on the sidelines or in a supporting role. Her commitment eventually leads to a mutual relationship with Tsubasa, and by the World Youth arc he confesses his feelings to her. The two marry, and in later parts of the series she is expecting twins, with the couple's future twin sons later identified as Hayate and Daibu.

Her most important relationship is with Tsubasa, which develops from an initial one-sided crush into deep mutual love and marriage. She also shares close bonds with her fellow cheerleaders and the other members of the team. At one point she competes, without Tsubasa's full awareness, for his attention with another team manager named Kumi, and she is also pursued by a boxing club student named Koshi Kanda, who tries to win her for himself, before Tsubasa finally declares his love to her.

In terms of abilities, she is not a footballer and never plays the sport competitively. Her strengths lie in organization, leadership, and emotional support. As head of the cheerleaders she coordinates and leads the crowd's support for the team, and as manager she takes on logistical duties that help the players focus on their matches. Her constant encouragement and belief in Tsubasa are presented as a meaningful source of motivation for him throughout his career.
