Description
Mortimere is the Gym Leader of the Ecruteak City Gym in the Johto region, specializing in Ghost-type Pokémon. He awards the Fog Badge to Trainers who defeat him in battle. He has a calm and composed demeanor, often appearing thoughtful and introspective. Mortimere is deeply passionate about the history and legends of his hometown, particularly the stories of the legendary Pokémon Ho-Oh and the two towers that once stood in Ecruteak. This fascination drives much of his motivation, as he spends considerable time studying these myths alongside his close friend and fellow researcher Eusine.

In the anime, Mortimere is first encountered when the protagonist Ash Ketchum and his friends mistakenly enter the Burned Tower. Mortimere introduces himself and explains the local legends. Initially, Mortimere is skeptical of Ash’s claim that he saw Ho-Oh at the start of his journey, believing such an encounter to be extraordinary. However, after a Gym battle in which Ash defeats him by using his Noctowl’s Foresight move to make Mortimere’s Ghost Pokémon vulnerable to normal attacks, Mortimere acknowledges Ash’s spirit and sincerity, ultimately accepting that Ash may indeed have glimpsed Ho-Oh.

Mortimere is known for his teaching role, as he instructs students on the nature and training of Ghost Pokémon. He understands that Ghost types often lack raw physical power and relies on disorienting and confusing opponents through illusions and status conditions. His signature Pokémon is Gengar, which he uses confidently in battle. Mortimere has a reputation as a mystic, possessing a form of clairvoyance that allows him to perceive things others cannot. This ability aligns with his title as the “Mystic Seer of the Future.” He also actively protects the Burned Tower and Tin Tower, sites of great historical and cultural significance in Ecruteak.

Throughout his appearances, Mortimere demonstrates a strong sense of duty to his position and a desire to preserve the region’s heritage. His relationship with Eusine is marked by mutual respect and a shared quest to learn more about legendary Pokémon. Mortimere’s character undergoes subtle growth as he becomes more open to the possibilities of others’ experiences, as seen in his changed view of Ash. His expertise in Ghost-type Pokémon, combined with his calm insight and dedication to lore, make him a respected figure in both the Gym circuit and the cultural life of Johto.
