Upon learning that Ash and Misty are personally acquainted with the Professor, he decides to join their group as they travel through the Orange Islands, replacing their companion Brock, who has remained behind with another researcher. During his journey with Ash and Misty, Kenji serves as a knowledgeable companion and a capable battler. His role in the story evolves when the group returns to Kanto; rather than continuing to travel with them, Kenji chooses to remain in Pallet Town to become Professor Oak’s official assistant, a position in which he appears in subsequent episodes and specials.

In terms of key relationships, Kenji acts as a supportive and reliable friend to both Ash and Misty during their Orange Islands adventure. His connection to Professor Oak is the most significant, as it dictates his life's path. He also shares a close bond with his own Pokémon. His team includes a Marill, which he caught before meeting Ash and which uses its sensitive ears to help locate wild Pokémon; a Venonat, which uses its large eyes for scanning areas; and a Scyther, which he rescued after it had been badly injured by its own kind and later captured, with the Scyther becoming his primary battling partner. Over time, his Venonat is known to have evolved into a Venomoth while in his care as the Professor's assistant. Kenji is characterized by his calm and observant personality, always focused on learning and documenting the world around him, which is a direct reflection of his dedication to the profession of a Pokémon Watcher.
