Description
Bulbassauro is a small, quadrupedal Pokémon with a distinctive appearance, classified as both a Grass type and a Poison type. It has blue-green skin marked with darker spots, large red eyes, and a short, blunt snout. Its most defining feature is the large, plant-like bulb on its back, which is present from birth and grows alongside the creature. This bulb can absorb sunlight, providing Bulbassauro with energy and allowing it to survive for extended periods without eating. In the anime, the most prominent Bulbassauro is the one owned by the main character, Ash Ketchum.

The background of Ash’s Bulbassauro is established early in the original series. Before meeting Ash, it lived in a hidden village where a kind girl named Melanie cared for abandoned and injured Pokémon. This experience made it wary of Pokémon Trainers, as it had seen many creatures neglected by their previous owners. Because Ash arrived late on the day he was supposed to receive his first Pokémon from Professor Oak, the traditional starter choices of Bulbassauro, Charmander, and Squirtle were no longer available, leading him to partner with Pikachu instead. Ash later encountered and captured this specific Bulbassauro during his journey, making it one of his earliest Pokémon.

In terms of personality, Ash’s Bulbassauro is consistently portrayed as mature, responsible, and level-headed. It frequently acts as a mediator and leader among Ash’s other Pokémon, often stepping in to resolve disputes or guide less experienced members of the team. Its past experiences with neglect initially made it cautious and cynical toward Trainers, but after joining Ash, it became one of his most loyal and faithful partners. Despite its typical seriousness, it can display a stubborn and competitive side, especially when provoked or in a battle. It shares a notable rivalry with Ash’s Squirtle; while they are close friends, their contrasting personalities—Bulbassauro’s maturity versus Squirtle’s boisterous immaturity—often lead to disagreements and quarrels.

A central part of Bulbassauro’s motivation is its sense of duty and a desire to prove its own strength. It is an eager and serious battler who dislikes being recalled from a fight before it can secure a victory. Its role in the story extends beyond mere combat. Bulbassauro is often depicted as a peacemaker and a problem-solver, demonstrating remarkable intelligence. On one occasion, a character described it as a "Pokémon genius". It also shows a deep nurturing instinct, particularly towards younger or weaker Pokémon, using its vines to comfort them. When not traveling with Ash, Bulbassauro resides at Professor Oak’s laboratory, where it acts as a leader and mediator for the many other Pokémon living there, maintaining order and reporting any problems.

Bulbassauro’s key relationships are central to its character. Its bond with Ash is built on mutual respect and trust, evolving from initial skepticism to unwavering loyalty. Its friendship and rivalry with Squirtle is a recurring source of comic relief. Bulbassauro also formed a meaningful connection with May's Bulbasaur, taking the younger Pokémon under its wing to train it at Professor Oak’s lab, a testament to its leadership and teaching abilities. Bulbassauro also has a curious fear of its own fully evolved form, Venusaur, having been terrified by illusions of the creature on two separate occasions. This fear, however, does not stop it from defying a real Venusaur when it feels strongly about a cause, showcasing its underlying courage.

Over the course of the series, Ash’s Bulbassauro receives notable development. Despite having the opportunity to evolve, it consistently refuses. This decision is portrayed not as a weakness but as a strong-willed choice to remain in its current form and prove that it can be powerful without evolving. Its growth is shown through its accumulating wisdom, its ability to recognize traps and strategies that other Pokémon cannot, and its role as a trusted ambassador and leader at Professor Oak’s lab.

As a fighter, Bulbassauro possesses several notable abilities. Its primary skills include using the two vines hidden within its bulb to perform moves like Vine Whip, which are strong enough to pull its own body weight and deflect attacks. It can also use its bulb to fire seeds or powerful beams of sunlight, known as the Solar Beam attack. Demonstrated both in battles and its natural behavior, Bulbassauro has the ability to influence plant life, using the forest to its advantage. Uniquely in the anime, Ash’s Bulbassauro has shown the capacity to learn moves that it cannot in the video games, such as Dig, a Ground-type move it learned in a moment of desperation, further highlighting its extraordinary determination and talent.
