Description
Kotaro Kobayashi is a middle school student and a classmate of the protagonist Misaki Suzuhara in the anime and manga series Angelic Layer. He is twelve years old and lives with his younger sister, Hatoko Kobayashi. His family runs a karate dojo, and Kotaro has received some training in the martial art himself, although he does not practice it competitively.
Kotaro is shy and reserved by nature, often keeping to himself and avoiding large crowds or events. Despite his quiet demeanor, he possesses a keen interest in the world of Angelic Layer and follows the battles with genuine enthusiasm. He does not participate as a player himself, but he becomes an important supporter for Misaki, frequently attending her matches and offering strategic advice. His ability to analyze her strengths and weaknesses in the game proves helpful for her growth as a deus.
His personality is marked by kindness and a strong sense of empathy. He is often the target of Tamayo Kizaki’s martial arts drills, having been subjected to her techniques since he was four years old. He endures this teasing without serious complaint, and a friendship develops between them. Over time, Kotaro develops a crush on Misaki, which leads to feelings of jealousy when Ohjiro Mihara shows interest in her. In a moment of competitiveness, Kotaro attempts to play a quasi-match of Angelic Layer against Ohjiro, despite having no prior experience in the game, showing a willingness to step out of his comfort zone for the sake of his feelings.
Kotaro’s relationships are central to his role in the story. He is a loyal friend to Misaki, and he also looks out for his younger sister Hatoko. His interactions with Tamayo are marked by comedic physical abuse, but in the anime adaptation, Tamayo eventually confesses her feelings to Kotaro, and the two end up together. In the original manga, Kotaro’s romantic interest in Misaki is reciprocated, and they begin dating by the story’s conclusion.
Kotaro does not possess any supernatural or extraordinary abilities within the Angelic Layer game, but his knowledge of karate allows him to provide practical advice to Misaki on movement and timing, which she can apply to her angel, Hikaru. His development is subtle: he grows from a timid and easily embarrassed boy into a more confident and supportive friend, willing to confront rivals and express his emotions. His role as a grounded, non-playing observer gives the audience an accessible entry point into the world of the sport and reinforces the themes of friendship and personal growth that define the series.
