Description
Kazumi Amano is one of the central characters in the anime Gunbuster. Born on November 15, 2004, she is a standout student at the Okinawa Girls' Space Pilot High School, where she is known for her exceptional grades, calm demeanor, and striking appearance, which make her an idol among her peers. Her fellow students, including the protagonist Noriko Takaya, address her with the respectful and affectionate nickname Onee-sama, meaning "big sister". Despite her natural talent, her abilities are portrayed as the result of continuous diligence and devotion to training rather than innate genius alone.

Kazumi's personality is generally calm and composed, but beneath this exterior lies a degree of mental vulnerability. She takes her responsibilities seriously and is deeply committed to her role as a pilot. However, she initially doubts Coach Koichiro Ohta's decision to pair her with Noriko, a less experienced freshman whom she feels is unready for the demands of combat. This leads her to protest the pairing and even threaten to dissolve the partnership, reflecting her pragmatic and cautious nature. As the story progresses, Noriko's determination and growth cause Kazumi to reevaluate her stance, and she comes to trust her younger partner completely, forming a close bond of affection and mutual respect.

Her role in the story is that of a skilled pilot and a mentor figure. As the ace of the RX-7 squadron and holder of the title "Rose Queen", she is selected to pilot Buster Machine Unit 2, which combines with Unit 1 to form the super-robot Gunbuster. Her primary motivation is to defend humanity from the extraterrestrial threat known as space monsters. A significant personal motivation is her secret love for her coach, Koichiro Ohta. This relationship creates a profound internal conflict for her, as the nature of space combat near the speed of light causes time dilation, meaning that even a short mission could result in years passing on Earth, time she fears losing with Ohta, who is already suffering from a fatal radiation sickness.

Kazumi's key relationships are central to her character arc. Her friendship with Noriko evolves from a distant admiration into a deep and essential partnership, with each pilot supporting the other in moments of crisis. Her rivalry with the genius pilot Jung Freud begins with a competitive duel but eventually develops into a close friendship. Her relationship with Coach Ohta culminates in marriage right before the final, critical mission to the galactic core, after which she takes his surname, becoming Kazumi Ohta.

Throughout the series, Kazumi undergoes significant development. She starts as the seemingly perfect upperclassman but reveals her fears and insecurities when facing the possibility of losing the man she loves. This moment of near-despair during battle, from which she is pulled back by Noriko's screams, is a key turning point. After her marriage and Ohta's subsequent death, she returns to Earth and takes up his former position as a coach at their alma mater, demonstrating her resilience and maturity. Years later, she rejoins the fight, piloting Buster Machine Unit 3 into the final battle. In the end, she and Noriko make the ultimate sacrifice together, using Gunbuster to manually detonate a black hole bomb, an act that strands them in time for 12,000 years before they finally return home.

As a pilot, Kazumi possesses excellent motor skills and is considered a genius in space combat, even forming a rivalry with the prodigy Jung Freud. She is known for her mastery of the RX-7 Giselle and later pilots the advanced Buster Machine #2. Her notable abilities include a strong tactical sense, proficiency in various combat techniques such as the Sekiun Defense and various lightning kicks, and the unwavering willpower needed to endure the immense physical strain of piloting a Buster Machine, withstanding forces of nearly half a million Gs.
