Miyo Sasaki, nicknamed Muge, is a 14-year-old girl with light brown hair tied in a tousled ponytail and warm brown eyes. Often barefoot and dressed in an untucked school uniform, she adopts a white cat form named Taro, marked by light brown patches on the nose and tail tip, with striking blue eyes. Her name, blending “beautiful” and “generation,” contrasts her surname Sasaki, meaning “bamboo grass” and “tree.” Resentment toward her absent mother and strained acceptance of her stepmother Kaoru fuel Miyo’s yearning to escape reality. She obtains a magical cat mask from a shadowy vendor, transforming into Taro—a name borrowed from Kento Hinode’s late dog. Disguised, she bonds with Hinode, uncovering his grief over his family’s closing pottery shop while concealing her identity. Beneath her boisterous antics and impulsive “Hinode Sunrise Attack” ambushes lies hidden depression. Her fragile composure shatters when bullies expose her heartfelt letter to Hinode, provoking his harsh rejection. Devastated, Miyo nearly abandons humanity, her human face peeling into a porcelain mask claimed by the vendor. Kaoru’s elderly cat Kinako temporarily inhabits Miyo’s life, trading places as she remains trapped in feline form. Losing grasp of human language, Miyo regrets her choice. Guided by Kinako, Hinode dons a mask to become half-cat, journeying to a mystical island to confront the manipulative vendor. There, Miyo reconciles with Hinode, who admits his feelings and apologizes. Reclaiming her face from Kinako, Miyo returns human, repairing ties with Kaoru and embracing her identity without the mask’s refuge. Her journey mirrors themes of self-acceptance and escapism’s perils, while her nickname Muge—short for “Infinite Mystery Person”—encapsulates the duality of her human struggles and feline metamorphosis.
