Description
Meiling Li is a character who appears in the anime adaptation of Cardcaptor Sakura. She is the cousin of Syaoran Li and was considered his betrothed from early childhood, having grown up with him in Hong Kong. Her birthday is March 25th.

When she first arrives in Tomoeda, Meiling is presented as a spirited and somewhat aggressive girl who is single-mindedly devoted to Syaoran. This devotion initially makes her extremely jealous of Sakura Kinomoto, whom she views as a rival for Syaoran's attention. Her personality at this stage is often described as brash, possessive, and prone to showing off, largely because she wishes to involve herself in Syaoran's mission to capture the Clow Cards. Because she lacks any magical abilities herself, a rarity in the Li family, she relies on her skills as a martial artist to compensate. However, her eagerness to help often leads to her interfering in battles against the Clow Cards, which adds to her frustration and her jealousy towards Sakura, who is a powerful magician.

Despite her challenging introduction, Meiling's motivations are rooted in a deep, single-minded love for Syaoran, which began after a childhood incident where he braved a rainstorm to retrieve her lost pet bird. As the series progresses, she gradually adapts to her new surroundings in Tomoeda. Her hostile rivalry with Sakura softens into a genuine friendship, as she finds herself unable to hate the kind-hearted girl. Her role in the story evolves from that of a jealous obstacle to a valued ally and friend. She demonstrates her perceptiveness and strategic thinking in battles, such as when she devises a plan to use the Freeze card to stop enchanted stone penguins or coordinates a synchronized attack with Syaoran to capture the Twin card.

The most significant turning point for Meiling occurs when she briefly returns to Tomoeda and realizes that Syaoran has fallen in love with Sakura. In an act of great maturity, she calls off their engagement, honoring the promise she made as a child. Heartbroken, she spends the night crying at the home of Tomoyo Daidouji, who becomes a close confidante. This moment signifies her profound emotional development, as she prioritizes Syaoran's happiness over her own desires and becomes a supportive figure who hopes for his and Sakura's success.

In the sequel series, Clear Card, Meiling has matured into a calmer and more perceptive young woman. She remains close friends with Sakura, even addressing her by her first name, and serves as an observant and wise advisor to both Sakura and Syaoran, gently encouraging their romantic relationship. Her competitive nature has tempered into a quiet strength, and she continues to value her friendships above all.

Notable abilities include that Meiling is a highly skilled martial artist, proficient in hand-to-hand combat and Chinese kung fu, making her a formidable physical fighter. She possesses keen perceptive combat skills, allowing her to analyze situations effectively and devise clever strategies despite her lack of magic.
