Description
In the French dub of the anime Cardcaptor Sakura, the character known as Lionel corresponds to Syaoran Li, a central figure in the series. He is a young Chinese sorcerer from Hong Kong and a distant descendant of the powerful magician Clow Reed. Lionel arrives in the fictional town of Tomoeda with the goal of capturing the Clow Cards that were accidentally released by the series' protagonist, Sakura Kinomoto. He initially regards Sakura as an unworthy rival and frequently clashes with her, using his own magical abilities and a magic compass to locate and capture cards before she can.

Lionel's personality begins as cold, critical, and competitive, often displaying a tsundere attitude—acting harshly while hiding his deeper feelings. He is serious, independent, and struggles to express emotions, partly because he has been raised by his family in Hong Kong to be self-reliant. Over time, his interactions with Sakura and her friends soften him. He becomes more caring, protective, and loyal, though he still has difficulty articulating his feelings. His motivations shift from ambition to wanting to protect Sakura and help her master the cards. He also develops a romantic love for Sakura, which he eventually confesses.

In the story, Lionel serves as a deuteragonist, initially a rival but later a close ally and love interest. His role is expanded in the anime compared to the original manga, including the introduction of his cousin Meiling Li, who claims to be his fiancée. Lionel's key relationships include his evolving bond with Sakura, his friendship with Tomoyo Daidouji, who often encourages him, and his antagonistic dynamic with the guardian Cerberus (Kero). He initially feels drawn to Yukito Tsukishiro, but this attraction is later revealed to be a reaction to Yukito's strong magical aura from his true identity, Yue. Lionel's development is marked by his journey from a haughty boy to a compassionate young man who learns to prioritise others' well‑being over his own pride.

Notable abilities include heightened magical sensitivity, allowing him to detect cards even when they are concealed. He uses Eastern magic, employing enchanted talismans (ofuda) and a ritual sword for combat, as well as his compass for dowsing. He is also skilled in martial arts and shows proficiency in elemental spells. Throughout the series, he captures several Clow Cards himself and plays a crucial role in helping Sakura during the Final Judgment and the subsequent transformation of the Clow Cards into Sakura Cards. In the sequel series Clear Card, he continues to support Sakura, though he becomes more stoic and secretive in his efforts to protect her.
