Lee Sorang is a young sorcerer from Hong Kong who transfers to Tomoeda Elementary School after learning that the Clow Cards have been scattered. He is a direct descendant of the powerful magician Clow Reed through his mother’s side and was raised as the heir of the Li clan, a family with a long tradition of sorcery. His father died when he was young, leaving him as the only son among five siblings. Sorang has short chestnut hair and brown eyes and is initially cold, distant, and blunt, often criticizing Sakura Kinomoto for what he perceives as her lack of magical strength and her carelessness. His motivation for coming to Japan is to capture all the Clow Cards himself and prove that he is the rightful successor to Clow Reed’s legacy.

As the story progresses, Sorang’s rivalry with Sakura gradually softens. He begins to admire her kindness and determination, and he starts showing a more caring and protective side, often blushing when she speaks to him. He also develops a brief infatuation with Yukito Tsukishiro, but this is later revealed to be a reaction to the powerful lunar magic within Yukito rather than genuine romantic feelings. After accepting that Sakura is the true master of the Clow Cards, Sorang becomes her close ally and trusted friend, frequently assisting her in capturing cards and offering strategic advice. He eventually falls in love with her and confesses his feelings, leading to a mutual romantic relationship that continues into their early teenage years in the Clear Card arc.

Sorang’s key relationships include his bond with Sakura, which evolves from hostility to deep affection; his friendship with Tomoyo Daidouji, who becomes his confidante and often teases him about his feelings; his rivalry-turned-friendship with the guardian beast Cerberus, who calls him Brat; and his interactions with his cousin Meiling Li, who is introduced in the anime and initially claims to be his fiancée, though she later supports his relationship with Sakura. Sorang also shares a respectful but cautious association with the guardian Yue and a tense, adversarial dynamic with the antagonist Eriol Hiiragizawa during the final trial of the Clow Cards.

In terms of abilities, Sorang possesses strong magical sensitivity, allowing him to sense the presence and nature of Clow Cards from a distance. He wields a family heirloom sword that he can summon from a jade bead and uses various talismans inscribed with Chinese characters to invoke elemental magic, including fire, thunder, water, wind, and ice. He is also skilled in dowsing using a compass board, martial arts, and swordsmanship. Over time, his magical power grows, and by the Clear Card arc he has merged his sword with his body, enabling him to cast spells without talismans. His development is marked by a gradual shift from arrogance and insecurity to selflessness and emotional maturity, learning to prioritize others’ happiness over his own pride.
