Description
Zhang Fei appears as a supporting figure during the first round of the Ragnarok tournament. His background lies in China's late Eastern Han dynasty and Three Kingdoms period, serving as a military general under Liu Bei. He was among Liu Bei's earliest followers, sharing a close, brotherly bond with him and Guan Yu. Zhang Fei participated in major campaigns like Red Cliffs and the takeover of Yi Province, holding titles including General Who Attacks Barbarians and Administrator of Yidu Commandery, later reassigned as Administrator of Nan Commandery. He was assassinated by subordinates in 221 AD shortly after Liu Bei founded Shu Han. This history is embellished in the 14th-century Romance of the Three Kingdoms, depicting his sworn brotherhood with Liu Bei and Guan Yu in the Oath of the Peach Garden, a loyalty he maintained until death.
Within Record of Ragnarok, Zhang Fei possesses the physical appearance and capabilities reflecting his "Golden Age," his peak as a human soul. He has black hair and eyes, a round belly, a large nose, a long black beard, thick eyebrows, and long black hair, typically wearing a military uniform with pieces of armor. His personality is boisterous and enthusiastic, with a noted enjoyment of alcohol, frequently drinking from large barrels. He demonstrates unwavering admiration and support for Lü Bu, the human representative in Ragnarok's first round.
Zhang Fei is present at key moments involving Lü Bu. An earlier instance shows him alongside Liu Bei and Guan Yu observing Yuan Shu's army from the walls of Xiaopei, expressing anticipation upon Lü Bu entering the battlefield. His prominent role occurs during the first round of Ragnarok, where he spectates the match between Lü Bu and Thor from the human stands. He vocally cheers for Lü Bu, yelling for the gods to acknowledge Lü Bu as the era's greatest warrior. He celebrates visibly when Lü Bu damages one of Thor's Járngreipr gloves, an action taunting the gods. His demeanor shifts to concern as Thor unleashes Mjölnir's full power and uses the Geirröd Thor's Hammer technique. He, Liu Bei, and Guan Yu react with shock to Lü Bu's severe injuries and the arrival of Red Hare, with Zhang Fei remarking on their destined bond. Following Lü Bu's defeat and death, Zhang Fei tearfully acknowledges the end as fitting for the warrior's character, then participates in a toast with Liu Bei and Guan Yu honoring Lü Bu's memory.
His abilities stem from his peak human soul status, granting him "Superhuman Strength" demonstrated by effortlessly carrying a large barrel filled with alcohol simultaneously with Liu Bei. He is also recognized as an "Expert General and Warrior," reflecting his historical and legendary prowess in combat and military leadership. While not a primary tournament fighter, Zhang Fei serves as a vocal embodiment of human support and camaraderie during the first round, his reactions providing emotional context to Lü Bu's struggle against divine power.
