Description
Delgiar, also frequently romanized as Dilgear, is a minor antagonist from the anime and light novel series. He is a hybrid creature, specifically a half-beastman and half-troll, which gives him a unique set of physical traits and abilities. He is introduced as a swordsman serving under the wizard Rezo the Red Priest and is initially placed under the command of Zelgadiss Graywords, Rezo's great-grandson.

In terms of personality, Dilgear is characterized by his violence and aggression. Unlike some of his associates, he is quick to resort to lethal force against his enemies and has little hesitation when it comes to killing. He is also noted for not being particularly intelligent, often acting impulsively and speaking without thinking through the consequences. Despite being subordinate to Zelgadiss, his true and ultimate loyalty remains with Rezo, a fact that defines his primary motivation and leads to his direct conflict with his former commander.

Dilgear's role in the story is that of a recurring henchman and pursuer. He first appears in the fourth episode of the Slayers anime. His primary function is to act as an agent of Rezo, tasked with hunting down Zelgadiss after Zelgadiss breaks ties with the Red Priest to seek his own path. Later, in the continuity of the light novels and manga, he resurfaces as a bounty hunter, sent alongside other mercenaries like Rahanimu and Vrumugun to eliminate the protagonists Lina Inverse and Gourry Gabriev.

His key relationships are primarily with his masters and allies. His relationship with Zelgadiss is one of subordination that turns into enmity, with Zelgadiss fully anticipating Dilgear's betrayal due to his loyalty to Rezo. He is associated with other henchmen of Rezo, including Zolf, Rodimus, and Noonsa. However, unlike Dilgear, their allegiance remains with Zelgadiss after his defection, leading to a pivotal confrontation where Zolf and Rodimus turn on him.

The character undergoes a notable, if unusual, development by the end of his story arc in the light novels. After being defeated, he survives due to his troll regeneration and wanders aimlessly until he collapses from hunger in the kingdom of Zephilia. There, he is found by Luna Inverse, the powerful sister of Lina Inverse. Mistaking him for a stray, Luna decides to adopt him, chains him to a giant doghouse, and renames him Spot. Despite the humiliation, he feels a debt of loyalty to her for saving his life and ultimately remains as her pet, with some interpretations suggesting he eventually comes to accept this life.

Dilgear possesses several notable abilities. His hybrid nature grants him the powerful regenerative capabilities of a troll, allowing him to survive wounds that would be fatal to a normal human or beastman, a fact he boasts about when seemingly killed. He is also a skilled swordsman, typically fighting with a blade as his primary weapon, though he is not portrayed as being on par with the series' main fighters. His appearance is that of a green-furred, humanoid wolf with pointed ears and a tail, often wearing a blue tunic, light leather armor, gloves, and boots.
