Description
The character commonly known as Karla is also referred to by her original name from her life as a human sorcerer, Arnakarla. The name Lailia refers to the young priestess Leylia, whose body Karla possesses for a significant period. Understanding this distinction is key, as the two are separate beings whose identities become tragically intertwined. Karla, known as the Grey Witch, is one of the most pivotal and complex figures in the history of Lodoss, a sorcerous entity who has manipulated the island's destiny for centuries.
Karla was originally a powerful sorceress from the ruling family of the ancient Kingdom of Kastuul, a realm of immense magical power. When Kastuul fell to barbarian invasions, Karla foresaw its destruction as a consequence of its hubris and unchecked power. To survive, she performed a ritual to seal her soul and vast magical abilities into a golden circlet. When she was slain in battle, her consciousness transferred to the barbarian who killed her, beginning an endless cycle of possession. For over five hundred years, Karla has survived by inhabiting one human body after another, wearing the circlet on her forehead, which bears two distinctive red eye-like gems. The body she uses during the main conflict of the War of Heroes is that of Leylia, the kidnapped daughter of the high priestess Neese.
Karla's primary motivation is not personal power or conquest, but the preservation of Lodoss itself through a rigid, coldly logical philosophy of balance. Having witnessed the self-destruction of Kastuul, she believes that any single nation, ideology, or force becoming too powerful will inevitably lead to a similar catastrophe. Therefore, her life's work is to act as a hidden arbiter, preventing any one side from achieving total victory. In times of swelling peace and unity, she will quietly foment conflict and war. In times of devastating war, she will intervene to end it before it leads to total annihilation. She views the people of Lodoss as pieces on a game board, necessary sacrifices for the greater good of the island's survival. Because she serves neither the cause of light nor darkness exclusively, but only her own doctrine of equilibrium, she is known not as a black or white witch, but as the Grey Witch.
Karla's role in the story is that of a master manipulator and secondary antagonist, whose actions drive much of the central conflict. Thirty years before the War of Heroes, she was one of the Six Heroes who united to defeat the Demon King, though she kept her identity secret from all but the sage Wort. After that victory, she saw the rise of two powerful forces: King Fahn of Valis, who sought to unite Lodoss through peace, and Emperor Beld of Marmo, who sought to conquer it. Viewing both as threats to the balance, Karla subtly orchestrated a war between them, ensuring that both would be weakened. She engineers the duel where Beld kills Fahn, then ensures Beld's own death at the hands of King Kashue by having an arrow fired to distract him. Later, when the dark sorcerer Wagnard attempts to resurrect the dark goddess Kardis, Karla sees this as an even greater threat to the island and manipulates events to stop him, even briefly considering aiding the heroes if they would sacrifice themselves for the cause.
Karla's key relationships are defined by her possession of Leylia. The dwarf Ghim, who was deeply close to Leylia before her disappearance, spends years hunting Karla to free her. This quest brings him into the company of the young warrior Parn and his companions. In a climactic battle, Ghim sacrifices his life to hurl his axe and knock the circlet from Leylia's head, freeing her but dying in the attempt. However, Karla's consciousness is not destroyed; it immediately transfers to the thief Woodchuck, who was part of Parn's group. She later discards Woodchuck's aging body and eventually finds her way back to Leylia, who, after the final defeat of Wagnard, chooses to keep the circlet herself. Leylia reasons that if she remains aware and conscious while wearing it, she can resist Karla's full possession while still drawing upon the ancient witch's vast knowledge.
As a character, Karla does not undergo emotional development in a traditional sense, as her core ideology and goals remain fixed over centuries. However, the perception of her shifts from a purely malevolent kidnapper to a more nuanced force of nature. Her motivation is never evil for its own sake, but a twisted form of guardianship. Her most notable abilities include her original mastery of high sorcery, making her an immensely powerful spellcaster. Her primary and most unique power is her immortality through the circlet, allowing her to transfer her soul to any new host who dons it. This makes her virtually impossible to permanently destroy, only to be temporarily displaced. She also possesses centuries of knowledge about Lodoss's history, magic, and politics, making her a uniquely informed, if untrustworthy, figure on the island.
