Description
Beld, also known as the red-haired mercenary, was a central figure in the history of Lodoss, remembered as one of the legendary Six Heroes who defeated the Demon King and later as the ambitious Emperor of Marmo who plunged the island into the War of Heroes. He rose from humble origins among the barbarian tribes of the dark island of Marmo, leaving his homeland as a young man to pursue the life of a mercenary. This path brought him to the small kingdom of Skard in Moss, where he was hired as a captain of the prince's guard. There, he formed a crucial partnership with the young sorcerer Wort, and together they served the court until a betrayal by the prince led them both to depart and resume their travels as mercenaries.

His reputation as a warrior of immense skill eventually led him to join the Hundred Heroes, a volunteer force assembled to counter the demon army unleashed by the prince of Skard's stolen magical research. Within this group, Beld fought alongside other legendary figures who would become the Six Heroes, including Fahn, the future king of Valis, the warrior priestess Flaus, the dwarf king Flaibe, the priestess Neese, and a nameless warrior-mage. It was during this perilous quest that Beld fell in love with Flaus, who inspired his vision of a united Lodoss. However, the final battle against the Demon King ended in tragedy; Beld managed to slay the Demon King using the cursed sword Soul Crusher, but the victory cost him Flaus, who sacrificed herself in the fight.

Deeply affected by this loss and driven by a belief that Lodoss needed to be unified under a single, strong banner to withstand future evils, Beld returned to his native Marmo. He wielded the demonic Soul Crusher, a sword that had the ability to preserve his youth and strength. He united the island's barbarian tribes and allied with the dark elves, declaring himself Emperor of Marmo. His ambition, further inflamed by the subtle manipulations of the Grey Witch Karla, led him to initiate the War of Heroes, a massive invasion of the Lodoss mainland. His forces swiftly conquered the kingdom of Kanon and seized territories in Alania and Valis.

This campaign brought him into direct conflict with his old ally and friend, King Fahn of Valis, who sought to preserve peace through diplomacy rather than conquest. The two legendary heroes met in a decisive duel on the battlefield. Beld, empowered by the Soul Crusher, ultimately slew King Fahn. But at the moment of his victory, he was struck by a stray arrow. This distraction proved fatal, as King Kashue of Flaim, another ally of Fahn, seized the opportunity to kill the wounded and distracted Beld. His death marked a turning point in the war, though his legacy lived on through his protégé, the black knight Ashram, who inherited the Soul Crusher and continued his master's ambition of conquering Lodoss. Years later, Ashram and his followers, upon discovering new lands, would name a region Beldia in honor of the late emperor. In a final testament to his lasting influence, when the animal god Barbas possessed Ashram's body, he manifested an image of Beld within Ashram's subconscious to suppress his will, exploiting the deep respect and loyalty his former subordinate still held for him.
