Description
Beld, originally known as the red-haired mercenary, rose from the barbarian tribes of Marmo to become one of the most formidable warriors in the history of Lodoss and the Emperor of Marmo. His early life was marked by a departure from his native island, leading him to the kingdom of Skard in Moss. There, he was hired as a captain of the prince's guard and tasked with training the young prince Nasher, a position through which he met and befriended the sorcerer Wort. After a betrayal by the prince, Beld and Wort left together and traveled Lodoss as mercenaries, forging a strong and lasting partnership.

Beld’s legendary status was cemented when he joined the Hundred Heroes, a volunteer force assembled to combat the demon army that was unleashed upon Lodoss. This group, which would later be remembered as the Six Heroes, included the warrior priestess Flaus, the holy knight Fahn, the dwarf king Flaibe, the priestess Neese, and the nameless warrior-mage. During this epic journey, Beld fell deeply in love with Flaus, and it was her noble spirit and hope for a peaceful world that first inspired his dream of uniting Lodoss under a single banner. However, this dream was shattered during the final battle against the Demon King. In a desperate act to allow the god Falis to descend and smite the demon, Flaus sacrificed her own life, leaving Beld heartbroken. He was the one to land the killing blow on the Demon King using the dark blade that would become known as the Demon Sword Soul Crusher, but the victory came at the cost of his love and, it is said, his soul was tainted by the demon’s dying blood.

Following the Demon King’s defeat, Beld returned to his homeland of Marmo, wielding the cursed Soul Crusher. Driven by the darkness that now resided within him and the subtle manipulations of the immortal Grey Witch Karla, who sought to preserve a balance of power on Lodoss, Beld set into motion his plan for conquest. He united the warring tribes of Marmo under his rule, forged an alliance with the dark elves, and declared himself Emperor. His protégé, the dark knight Ashram, became his most trusted general, helping him to consolidate power on the island before launching a full-scale invasion of Lodoss. Beld’s campaign was swift and brutal, and his forces successfully conquered the kingdom of Kanon and seized regions of Valis and Alania, bringing the island to the brink of a devastating war.

Beld’s primary motivation was his singular, unwavering ambition to conquer and unite all of Lodoss, an ideal born from the tragedy of losing Flaus and corrupted by his own inner darkness. He believed that only through absolute, forced unity could the island be strong enough to withstand future threats, a philosophy that brought him into direct conflict with his former comrade, King Fahn of Valis, who valued peace above all else. The climax of the War of Heroes was a dramatic duel between these two former allies. Beld, his youth and power preserved by the Soul Crusher, was able to mortally wound King Fahn. Yet, in the moment of his victory, Beld was struck by a stray arrow. In that instant of distraction, King Kashue of Flaim seized the opportunity and slew the wounded Emperor. The circumstances of his death vary between adaptations; in the original OVA series, he is killed by the Grey Witch Karla, while in the novels and other versions, he is beheaded by King Kashue after being distracted by the arrow.

Beld’s role in the story is that of a tragic antagonist and a legendary figure whose past heroism is inextricably linked to his later villainy. His key relationships define his entire arc. His friendship and subsequent rivalry with King Fahn form the emotional core of the war, representing the clash between two different paths for Lodoss’s future. His love for Flaus was the pure inspiration for his dream, and her death became the catalyst for its dark perversion. His relationship with Wort, a wise sage, represents the good he left behind, while his mentorship of Ashram ensured that his ambition and legacy would continue beyond his death. Ashram inherited the Soul Crusher and carried on his master's wish, eventually leading the people of Marmo to find a new land, which they named Beldia in honor of the late emperor. In a further testament to his enduring influence, the animal god Barbas, who possessed Ashram’s body, later appeared in Ashram’s subconscious in the form of Emperor Beld to suppress the knight’s powerful will. Beld is a powerful warrior, his abilities honed over decades of combat, earning him the name one of the strongest on Lodoss. His most notable ability is his wielding of the Demon Sword Soul Crusher, a cursed blade that preserved his youth and granted him immense power in battle, a dark counterpart to King Fahn’s holy sword. His legacy is that of a hero who fell from grace, a conqueror whose dream of unity was realized only in the destruction he wrought.
