Description
Maze is the central protagonist of the anime and the primary point of view for the viewer. Her background begins in mystery, as she awakens with complete amnesia inside her own wrecked house, which has inexplicably crashed from the sky into a fantasy world. This event immediately establishes her as a lost traveler displaced across time and space, with no memory of her original identity or how she arrived. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Maze possesses an extraordinary dual nature tied to the cycle of day and night. During the daytime, she exists as a young woman who appears shy, soft-spoken, and often uncertain. She is overwhelmed by the chaos surrounding her sudden arrival and the dangerous new world she must navigate. Her initial reaction is one of confusion and a desire to understand her situation and find a way home, but she is quickly drawn into a larger conflict when she meets Princess Mill of the Batonian Empire, whose pursuers were crushed under Maze's falling house.
Personality-wise, the female Maze is gentle, reluctant to engage in violence, and somewhat passive, often needing to be pushed into action by circumstances or the urging of others. In stark contrast, when the sun goes down, Maze undergoes a complete physical and psychological transformation into a man. This male persona is bold, loud, highly confident, and extremely lecherous, with a strong libido that frequently drives him to pursue women. He is unbothered by combat, embraces the chaos of the fantasy world, and wields the same magical powers with far greater aggression and skill than his female counterpart. The two forms share a single consciousness but exhibit drastically different approaches to problems, creating a constant internal and external tension.
Maze's primary motivation evolves from a basic need to survive and recover her lost memories into a commitment to protect Princess Mill and help restore her to the throne of Bartonia. As a Phantom Illusionist, she discovers she can wield a rare and powerful type of magic called phantom light. This ability allows her to summon and pilot an ancient family heirloom mecha known as Dulger. However, her effectiveness with the mecha is directly tied to her current form. As the female, her combat performance with Dulger is notably weak and hesitant. As the male, her synchronization with the mecha becomes incredibly powerful, allowing her to handle even the most formidable spells and enemies. This transformation is a curse she cannot control, and it remains a central obstacle and asset throughout her journey.
In the story, Maze serves as both the protector and the reluctant hero of the party. She is the linchpin of the group's combat capability, as only she can summon and pilot Dulger effectively. Her role expands from a simple survivor into a key figure in the war against the Jaina Sacred Group, the religious organization that has overrun Mill's kingdom. Her journey is one of self-discovery, as she slowly uncovers fragments of her past and learns to cooperate with her own drastically different night-time self.
Her key relationships include her close bond with Princess Mill, who acts as the catalyst for the entire adventure and becomes her most loyal companion. Maze also attracts the attention of Aster and Solude, two Demi-Armor hunters who are both romantically interested in her female form. She is joined by Randy, a small fairy and guide who often hides in her shirt for safety, and Rapier, a knight and fellow Demi-Armor pilot from a neighboring kingdom who joins the group after her own kingdom falls. These relationships form a makeshift family that supports Maze through her struggles.
Over the course of the series, Maze develops from a confused, amnesiac girl into a more capable and determined hero. She learns to accept her dual identity and to use the strengths of both her day and night forms to overcome challenges. Her character growth is marked by a gradual acceptance of the strange world she has been thrust into and a deepening sense of responsibility toward her companions. While the core duality of her personality remains, she begins to harmonize the two halves, finding a balance between the gentle hesitation of the woman and the reckless confidence of the man. Her notable abilities include the phantom light magic itself, the summoning and piloting of the mecha Dulger, and the involuntary and transformative magical sex shift that defines her entire existence.
