Description
Ran Chiki is a young boy who appears as a supporting character in the fantasy anime Maze. He is recognizable for his multi-hued hair and serves the group as an illuminator, a user of light-based abilities in the world of the story, and also as a pilot of demi-armor mecha. In both fields he is competent enough to participate, but he is not nearly as strong or as skilled as Maze, and his efforts in battle tend to fall short of the main heroes.
For most of his life, Ran Chiki has carried an unrequited love for Gold, who is actually a prince in disguise. This long-held devotion is central to his character and shapes much of his behavior. He is easily smitten and openly expressive about his feelings, rarely hesitating to pursue someone he finds appealing. When he first encounters Maze, he falls in love with Maze's male form at first sight, and he is also willing to make advances on the female form of Maze simply because she is Maze, often remarking that, given the situation, he will settle for the woman Maze. This eager, somewhat comical romantic persistence is one of his defining traits.
Within the story, Ran Chiki acts as a companion who supports the main cast through his illumination magic and his ability to pilot a demi-armor. His limitations become apparent during combat, as his piloting is noticeably weaker than Maze's. On one occasion, when the villain Gorgeous knocks Maze unconscious, Ran Chiki takes over piloting Dulgar, the group's central mecha, but is quickly defeated. His role is thus that of a well-meaning and willing helper who is outmatched in the most serious battles.
His development is tied mainly to his affections and his eagerness to prove useful. He remains devoted to Gold throughout the series, while his infatuation with Maze provides a recurring source of comedy in his interactions with the party. His notable abilities are his illumination magic and his demi-armor piloting, both of which he uses in support of the group, even though neither approaches the level of skill displayed by Maze.
