Description
Mei Ikaruga is the original identity of the female form of Maze, a young woman transported from the real world into a chaotic fantasy realm with her memories partially erased. Upon arriving in this new world, she recalls only her first name, Mei, and quickly becomes known simply as Maze. Her entrance into the fantasy world is dramatic and accidental; her house crashes down from the sky, landing on and killing an assassin who was about to murder Princess Mill. This bizarre event forges an immediate and powerful bond, as Maze becomes the princess's devoted protector against threats such as the Jaina Holy Group. She is identified as the Eraser, a being destined to correct a dimensional imbalance and ultimately confront a powerful ancestral figure known as the Creator, who shares her unique gender-shifting nature.

The core of Mei's existence is defined by a profound duality. She shares a single body with her brother, Akira Ikaruga, due to a magical accident rooted in their past. Their combined form is known as Maze, but control of their shared body shifts with the sun's cycle. During the day, Mei's consciousness is dominant, embodying a personality that is naturally pacifistic, reserved, and initially reluctant to engage in direct conflict. When night falls, however, her brother Akira takes over, manifesting as an aggressive, battle-loving, and often lecherous individual. Despite sharing a body, the two consciousnesses remain aware of each other; the female Maze is frequently seen inside their mind, protesting the male Maze's violent and predatory actions. This involuntary transformation creates a constant internal tension, as the gentle Mei is forced to confront her brother's starkly different approach to the dangers they face.

Mei Ikaruga possesses notable magical abilities, primarily of the phantom light variety. However, her effectiveness in combat is heavily dependent on her form. In her female daytime state, she struggles to wield her powers effectively, often coming across as less capable in direct magical combat. Her proficiency increases significantly when she pilots the Demi-Armor mecha known as Dulgar, a powerful machine that only potent phantom warriors like herself can summon and control. Despite this, she remains less formidable in her female form than her male counterpart, whose nighttime transformation unleashes vastly increased magical power and a natural affinity for fighting. The contrast between her defensive, reluctant nature and her brother's overwhelming offensive force is a central aspect of their shared combat role.

Key relationships profoundly shape Mei's journey. Her most significant bond is with Princess Mill, whom she protects with fierce devotion. While Mill frequently expresses romantic and intimate feelings toward her, the female Maze does not openly reciprocate these advances in the same manner. The connection with her brother, Akira, is the most complex. Their fusion into Maze is the result of a taboo romantic relationship they shared in their original world, a secret which led to their ostracism from their family. As fragmented memories of this shared past slowly return, the initial horror and reluctance Mei feels toward her brother's personality gradually evolve into a rekindled mutual affection. This rediscovered bond ultimately becomes a source of strength rather than a curse.

Throughout the story, Mei Ikaruga undergoes significant development. She begins as a confused, amnesiac individual who is a natural pacifist, largely swept along by events and her brother's aggressive interventions. As her journey progresses, she recovers more of her lost memories and begins to understand her true purpose as the Eraser. This understanding fosters a sense of belonging in the fantasy world, countering her initial feelings of isolation. Her relationships with companions, including the warrior Solude who shows attraction to her and the fairy Randy who often hides in her clothing, further integrate her into this new reality. By the conclusion of the TV series, she has fully accepted her dual existence. Choosing to forsake their original world, Mei and Akira decide to remain permanently in the fantasy realm, embracing their fused identity as Maze to protect the kingdom and the bond they can only truly share in this world.
