OVA
Description
Mackey Stingrey is a supporting character in the Bubblegum Crisis franchise, appearing across the original OVA series, its sequel Bubblegum Crash, and the remake Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040. He is the younger brother of Sylia Stingray, the leader of the vigilante group known as the Knight Sabers, and is her only surviving family member. Mackey was orphaned as a child when his father, Dr. Katsuhito Stingray, was killed in a mysterious explosion orchestrated by the Genom Corporation. He serves as the Knight Sabers' primary backup and mechanic, working alongside Sylia's associate Dr. Raven.
In terms of personality, Mackey is portrayed as a highly intelligent and technically gifted teenager, a prodigy with computers and machinery. In the original OVA series, his character is marked by a strong tendency toward voyeuristic behavior, as he frequently attempts to spy on the female members of the Knight Sabers, including his own sister, while they change into their hardsuits. This aspect of his personality is played for comedic effect. In Tokyo 2040, Mackey is reimagined as a more innocent and earnest young man who is genuinely shy, though circumstances often conspire to make him appear perverted against his intentions. He is deeply passionate about machines and takes great joy in repairing, building, and maintaining them. He cares deeply for his sister Sylia, and his presence often serves as an emotional anchor that prevents her from succumbing entirely to her darker, more obsessive tendencies.
Mackey's primary role in the story is that of a logistical and technical support specialist. He is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the Knight Sabers' hardsuits, as well as the constant upkeep of Priss's motorcycle, which is frequently damaged by her aggressive driving style. He also drives a large truck that delivers the Knight Sabers and their bikes to mission locations. When the situation demands it, Mackey is capable of piloting an armored suit himself and engaging in combat. He is shown to be a competent driver and operator of various mechanical systems.
His key relationships include his bond with his sister Sylia, which forms the emotional core of his involvement in the story. He also develops a romantic interest in Nene Romanova, the youngest member of the Knight Sabers. This relationship is portrayed more prominently in Tokyo 2040, where Nene's affection for him persists even as he is manipulated by external forces. He works alongside Dr. Raven, the team's other mechanic and scientific advisor, though Mackey often takes a more hands-on role with day-to-day repairs.
Mackey undergoes significant development, particularly in Tokyo 2040, where a major revelation reshapes his identity. It is disclosed that Mackey is not a human but a boomer, a type of bio-organic android. He was created by his father using a data chip derived from Sylia's own brain. He was the first prototype boomer, but he was classified as a failure because he was too human-like in his behavior, eating, sleeping, and living as a normal person would. His connection to Galatea, a powerful super-boomer, allows that entity to mentally manipulate him. Toward the climax of Tokyo 2040, Mackey's memories are erased by Galatea, who regards them as false data. However, his sacrifice of his remaining memories allows the Knight Sabers to infiltrate Galatea's stronghold, and his memories are ultimately restored once Galatea is destroyed.
Notable abilities include his exceptional skill with computers, electronics, and mechanical systems. He is the sole caretaker of the hardsuits, ensuring they remain operational and combat-ready. He can pilot combat armor and is an adept driver of heavy vehicles. His technical knowledge is vital to the Knight Sabers' operations, making him an indispensable member of the team even though he does not participate in frontline combat as often as the main members.
