OVA
Description
Brian J. Mason is a primary antagonist from the anime Bubblegum Crisis, portrayed as a high-level executive within the powerful GENOM corporation. His background is deeply tied to the origins of the series' central conflict, as he is the individual who murdered Professor Katsuhiro Stingray, the lead scientist who developed the advanced androids known as Boomers. This act was committed to steal the Boomer technology and the associated copyrights, an event that occurred approximately ten years before the main story and serves as a foundational trauma for the Stingray family.

In terms of personality, Mason is depicted as entirely amoral and ruthlessly ambitious. While he is a trusted employee of the GENOM Chairman, Quincy Rosenkreutz, his primary motivation is to usurp his superior and become the CEO of the corporation. He is a calculating figure who frequently ventures into the field to secure valuable Boomer technology for himself, demonstrating a willingness to betray his employer to further his own goals. His ambition is coupled with a degree of arrogance, exemplified when he dons his own powered hardsuit to personally confront the Knight Sabers, proclaiming himself the victor before his defeat.

Within the narrative, Mason serves as the main villain for the first three episodes of the original Bubblegum Crisis OVA series. His role is defined by his opposition to the Knight Sabers, the vigilante group of which Sylia Stingray, the daughter of his victim, is the leader. His key relationships are defined by conflict: he is the direct adversary of Sylia, and a treacherous underling to Quincy. During a confrontation, Sylia seemingly kills Mason by stabbing him in the throat, ending his immediate threat.

However, Mason's development takes a radical turn after his apparent death. It is generally accepted that he had a contingency plan, successfully transferring his personality and memories into a powerful Boomer body. He resurfaces under the name Largo, becoming an even more formidable antagonist for the remainder of the series. As Largo, his motivations evolve from simple corporate ambition to a messianic desire to free Boomers from human oppression and begin a revolution against humanity. In this form, he possesses god-like abilities, including a direct mental link to orbital satellite weapons capable of causing mass destruction, and he creates a team of synthetic Knight Sabers to frame the originals. His quest for vengeance and revolution continues into the sequel OVA, Bubblegum Crash, where he engineers a city-wide Boomer uprising and nearly destroys a nuclear reactor, requiring his final destruction at the hands of Sylia.

In the alternate continuity of Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, Mason's character is reinterpreted. He is driven by a deep-seated resentment of his employer, Quincy, who has forcibly extended his own life, denying Mason any chance of promotion. His obsession with Boomers takes on a fetishistic quality, showing more affection for his Boomer secretary than any human. His defining trait in this version is a desire to transcend humanity. After a failed youth attempt to implant Boomer technology into his body, he seeks the help of the powerful Boomer Galatea. She grants his wish by fusing his flesh with machinery, transforming him into a cybernetic gargoyle fused to the side of the GENOM tower, where he is later found by the Knight Sabers.

Notable abilities of Mason vary between his human and Boomer incarnations. As a human executive, he is shown to be capable of using a powered hardsuit for combat, engaging directly with Sylia. As the Boomer entity Largo, his abilities are vastly enhanced, including superhuman strength, the power to transform his body into a more menacing form, telepathic communication, and direct control over orbital weaponry. In Tokyo 2040, his final fused form grants him a grotesque union with the GENOM building itself, showcasing a different kind of technological apotheosis.
