Description
Mifuyu Mikura is the protagonist of Whoever Steals This Book. She is a first-year high school student living in the town of Yomunaga, a place known for its deep connection to books. Her family has a long history of book collecting: her great-grandfather established the Mikura Hall, a vast private library that became popular among locals, and her father now manages it. Despite this lineage, Mifuyu harbors a strong dislike for reading and has little interest in her family’s literary heritage.
At the beginning of the story, she is pragmatic and somewhat reluctant to engage with the fantastical aspects of her family’s legacy. Her life changes when a book is stolen from Mikura Hall, activating a curse that transforms the town into a series of fictional worlds. A mysterious girl named Mashiro appears and explains that the only way to reverse the curse is to find the thief. Mifuyu is thrust into the role of a detective, forced to navigate the shifting story-worlds and retrieve the stolen volumes. Her initial motivation is simply to restore normalcy, but as she journeys through the cursed narratives, she begins to understand the power of stories and accept her place within the Mikura family’s tradition.
Her key relationships include Mashiro, who acts as a guide and mentor, and her father, Ayumu, who manages the library and represents the family’s deep devotion to books. Her grandfather Junichiro, the founder of the library, also looms over the plot even though he is not physically present. Through her interactions with these characters and the challenges she faces, Mifuyu undergoes significant development. She starts as a cynical outsider who resents her family’s obsession and ends as a dedicated protector of the library and its stories. Her abilities are less about supernatural powers and more about her growing resourcefulness, determination, and willingness to solve the mysteries within each book-world. She does not possess special combat skills, but her practical mindset and emerging appreciation for narrative allow her to succeed where others might fail.
