Bazuso, also called the Grey Knight, was a formidable warrior with a fearsome reputation and one of the earliest named adversaries faced by Guts during the Golden Age. He was a large man in substantial plate armor, complete with heavy pauldrons and an eye-holed helmet that matched his robust physique. Brash and loud, Bazuso frequently taunted hesitant opponents and goaded his enemies, though he pleaded for mercy after Guts mortally wounded him. His strength was infamous; he was known as the Thirty-Man Slayer for defeating over thirty soldiers in combat and was said to have single-handedly killed a bear. With just one arm, he could send men flying using his pole-axe. When a young Guts offered to slay him for seven gold coins during a mercenary raid, Bazuso accepted out of amusement. He swung his heavy battle axe at Guts’ head, but Guts deflected every blow, denting and weakening the weapon until his sword pierced Bazuso’s stomach. The impact shattered the axe and left Bazuso mortally wounded. Despite his plea to wait, Guts drove his sword through his helmet, ending the fight. Bazuso’s defeat led Guts to encounter the Band of the Hawk. Corkus, a member, lamented that Guts had killed Bazuso, as he had wished to do so himself for fame. Griffith later remarked on Guts’ luck and impetus in the battle. Bazuso appears as a boss in the video game *Berserk and the Band of the Hawk*. In modes where he is an ally, he thanks his rescuer if aided and sheepishly admits his Thirty-Man Slayer title loses meaning if the player achieves 1000 kills. His helmet, weapon, and armor design vary across the manga, the 1997 anime, and the film trilogy. The character Siegmeyer of Catarina from the *Dark Souls* series was inspired by Bazuso.
