Description
Marlum is a supporting character in the anime Dusk Beyond the End of the World. He serves as an officer within OWEL, the unified organization that controls the post-apocalyptic world. He is the cousin of Caniss, another OWEL official, and shares his family's ruthless dedication to the organization's agenda. Marlum is introduced when he leads a squad of OWEL soldiers to apprehend the main characters Akira Himegami and Yugure, along with the painter girl Amoru, during their journey through Mount Osore. His personality is cold, calculating, and cruel. He has no hesitation in carrying out OWEL's policies of suppressing knowledge and controlling technology. When Amoru reveals she betrayed Akira and Yugure in exchange for the return of her parents' banned books, Marlum callously informs her that he has already burned those books and executed her parents. This act demonstrates his absolute loyalty to OWEL's ideology of erasing pre-apocalyptic culture and his lack of empathy. Furthermore, he later burns Amoru's last remaining book, a final cruel blow that fuels her desperate attack. His role in the story is that of an antagonist who represents the oppressive face of OWEL, enforcing its rules through violence and intimidation. His notable abilities are not specified in great detail, but he commands a group of armed soldiers and operates with the authority of his rank, suggesting tactical competence and access to OWEL's military resources. His relationship with Amoru is antagonistic, as he directly destroys her family's legacy and triggers a turning point in her character arc. Marlum's development is minimal; he remains a consistent symbol of the regime's brutality. He does not appear to undergo any change, serving instead as a obstacle for the protagonists and a catalyst for Amoru's transformation.
