Description
Koichi Haimawari, who adopts the vigilante alias the Crawler before later being known as the Skycrawler, is the main protagonist of My Hero Academia: Vigilantes. He is a university student living in Naruhata, a district of Tokyo, who works part-time at a convenience store. His dream of becoming a licensed Pro Hero was derailed when he chose to save a young girl from drowning instead of taking the entrance exam for U.A. High School. Following this, he enrolled in an ordinary school and largely set aside his heroic ambitions, believing his Quirk, Slide and Glide, was too unremarkable for the professional world.

Despite this setback, Koichi possesses an inherently kind and altruistic nature. He begins using his Quirk for small, unsanctioned acts of kindness, such as carrying groceries and helping elderly people cross the street, operating under the name Nice Guy. He is generally easygoing and mild-mannered, though he is often socially awkward and unaware of how he is perceived by others, which leads to misunderstandings with his peers. His defining trait is a quiet but persistent desire to help those in need, a drive that eventually brings him into the orbit of the vigilante Knuckleduster.

Koichi's motivation for becoming a vigilante is not ambition or a desire for fame, but a deeply ingrained sense of duty. He is inspired by heroes like All Might, but his actions are rooted in the simple belief that if he has the power to help someone, he should use it, regardless of the legal consequences. This puts him at odds with the heavily regulated hero society, where unlicensed Quirk use is a crime. His journey is one of reconciling his moral compass with the reality of operating outside the law.

His role in the story is the central figure of the Naruhata Vigilantes, a small team he forms with the experienced and brutal Knuckleduster and the street performer Pop Step. Together, they investigate the illegal Quirk-enhancing drug Trigger, taking on cases that the Pro Heroes are either unwilling or unable to handle. As the story progresses, Koichi grows from a hesitant helper into a decisive and capable protector, becoming essential to stopping the machinations of the villainous Number 6 and the influence of All For One.

Key relationships define his growth. Knuckleduster serves as a harsh but effective mentor, pushing Koichi to train rigorously and developing his combat instincts. The bond with Pop Step, who is revealed to be the very girl he saved years ago, adds a personal and romantic dimension to his story. He also develops a complicated dynamic with the American Pro Hero Captain Celebrity, eventually working as his sidekick. These relationships force Koichi to mature and understand the different facets of heroism.

The evolution of Koichi's Quirk, Slide and Glide, is a direct reflection of his character development. Initially, the Quirk allows him to slide across surfaces by generating ring-shaped repulsion fields from his hands and feet. It is notably slow and lacks offensive or defensive applications, limiting him to basic mobility. However, his constant vigilante work forces him to push the Quirk's limits. He learns to create brakes for higher speeds, glide up vertical surfaces, and eventually achieve flight. He develops the ability to fire concentrated repulsion blasts and construct barriers for defense. By the end of the series, he masters full-body propulsion, allowing him to fly at speeds comparable to the Overclock Quirk, making his once-modest ability one of the most versatile and powerful in the setting. This growth is earned entirely through persistence, training, and the necessity of protecting others.
