Description
Koichi Haimawari, known under his vigilante alias The Crawler, is the main protagonist of My Hero Academia: Vigilantes. He is a nineteen-year-old college student who works part-time at a convenience store and lives in a rented, rundown penthouse atop an old building in the Naruhata district.
His path to becoming a Pro Hero was tragically derailed before it could begin. As a child, he dreamed of attending a prestigious hero academy like U.A., inspired by All Might. However, on the day of the entrance exam, he stopped to save a child from drowning, an act of heroism that caused him to miss the exam entirely. Without the credentials of a licensed hero, he was forced to attend a regular high school and college, but he never stopped wanting to help people.
Koichi possesses a kind, easy-going, and mild-mannered personality. He is deeply generous and altruistic, often helping strangers without any expectation of reward or recognition. This quiet sincerity contrasts with his social awkwardness, which accidentally gives him an unfortunate reputation as a creepy or odd figure among his peers. Despite his natural meekness, he has a strong inner resolve and an unwavering sense of justice that compels him to act when he sees someone in trouble.
His core motivation is a simple, selfless desire to protect his community. Having been locked out of the official hero system, he feels it is still his duty to help those in need, regardless of legality. He is not driven by fame, accolades, or the desire to be a top hero, but rather by the quiet dignity of doing what is right even when the system does not reward him for it.
In the story, Koichi begins quietly using his Quirk for small acts of kindness around his neighborhood, such as picking up litter or carrying groceries, under the informal name Nice Guy. His life changes dramatically when he accidentally runs afoul of local thugs and is rescued by Knuckleduster, a brutal and mysterious vigilante. Knuckleduster takes Koichi under his wing, and together with the street performer Pop Step, they form the Naruhata Vigilantes. Koichi adopts the alias The Crawler, though the public frequently mangles his name and calls him The Hauler. As a vigilante, he operates in the shadows, dealing with street-level crime and the distribution of the dangerous Trigger drug, handling crises that often fall through the cracks of the official hero system.
His key relationships are central to his growth. Knuckleduster serves as a harsh but effective mentor, providing the training and tough love needed to transform Koichi from a timid helper into a capable fighter. Pop Step is his fellow vigilante and eventual love interest. Unbeknownst to Koichi, she is the child he saved from drowning years ago, and she has secretly admired him ever since. Their relationship starts as an awkward partnership and deepens into a strong, loyal bond. He also receives training from the Pro Hero Tensei Iida, Ingenium, who teaches him how to properly apply and brake his speed.
Koichi undergoes significant personal development throughout the series. He begins as an insecure, socially anxious student plagued by self-doubt. Through relentless training and facing dangerous threats, he builds immense confidence and sharpens his instincts. He evolves from a passive helper into a decisive protector who is willing to put himself in harm's way repeatedly. His journey represents a form of earned heroism rooted in persistence, empathy, and quiet determination rather than raw power or destiny.
His Quirk is Slide and Glide. It generates ring-shaped repulsion fields from the palms of his hands and the soles of his feet, allowing him to slide across any surface with no friction. Initially limited to scooting along the ground, Koichi trains rigorously to expand this ability. He learns to scale walls and ceilings, to stop quickly by applying opposing forces, and to hover in midair. He eventually achieves full, controlled flight by enveloping his entire body in the repulsion field. In combat, he develops the skill to focus the repulsive energy into powerful ranged blasts and strong defensive barriers. By the end of his story, he has mastered his Quirk to a tremendous degree, achieving incredible mobility and speed that allows him to match formidable opponents and become a quietly legendary figure in the hero world.
