Description
PopStep, whose real name is Kazuho Haneyama, is a key character in My Hero Academia: Vigilantes. She is a school-age girl who leads a double life: in her private moments she is a quiet, easily embarrassed, and somewhat awkward teenager, while in public she transforms into a flashy, self-proclaimed free idol who performs illegal guerrilla concerts out in the open. Her stage persona is defined by a daring costume, an eye mask, and a confident, mischievous presence. Although her singing and dancing are not especially polished, her charisma and energy earn her a genuine following.

Her backstory is tied closely to the protagonist, Koichi Haimawari. Five years before the main events, Kazuho nearly drowned in a river and was saved by Koichi, whose rescue attempt caused him to miss his hero academy entrance exam. She carried feelings of gratitude, guilt, and affection for him ever since, and her decision to become an idol and make herself seen was partly motivated by a desire to have him notice her. Koichi, however, did not recognize the girl he had saved, and she never directly revealed the connection. This shared history shapes much of her behavior throughout the story.

In terms of personality, Kazuho is sharp, logical, and observant, and she often serves as the brains of the Naruhata Vigilantes. She has a habit of scolding both Koichi and the masked vigilante Knuckleduster when they act recklessly, and she uses her phone, her instincts, and her attention to detail to narrow down leads and solve problems that the more combat-focused members overlook. She is also emotionally perceptive: she notices Koichi's self-doubt, presses him to face his ambitions, and believes in his potential to become a true hero even when he does not. Although she is not always warm about it, she is deeply loyal to her companions and does not hesitate to put herself in risky situations to help them.

Her role in the group is primarily supportive. Because her Quirk is not suited for direct combat, she contributes through information gathering, using her interactions with fans and the public to detect trouble, acting as a lookout during patrols, guiding civilians to safety, and lifting the team's spirits. Her ability to leap across rooftops gives her a practical form of transport and lets her reach incident scenes while staying out of harm's way. She is also the character most likely to defuse tense situations through charm and quick thinking, though her willingness to draw attention can sometimes put her in danger.

Her relationships are central to her development. With Koichi, she shares the deepest bond: she encourages him, covers for him, and struggles with unspoken romantic feelings that she cannot bring herself to confess. With Knuckleduster, she acts as a check on his violent methods, unwilling to stand by while he harms innocent people. Together, the three form an informal team, and Kazuho's intelligence and emotional insight are what keep that team grounded.

Her character arc takes a dark turn late in the series. She is targeted by the villain Number 6 and controlled through the parasitic Queen Bee Quirk, which transforms her against her will into a dangerous altered state known as Bee☆Pop. During this ordeal she is manipulated into harming others, loses her left eye, and suffers severe physical and psychological damage. She is ultimately rescued, but the story presents her as a victim of external manipulation rather than someone who willingly turned to villainy. Her survival does not come without cost: she requires a long hospital stay, rehabilitation, and time to recover from both her injuries and the trauma of being used as a weapon.

In the finale, set roughly a year after the main events, Kazuho is still in Naruhata, working to rebuild her life and reclaim her identity. She is not shown returning to vigilantism, and her relationship with Koichi is left open: he moves to America to pursue a hero career, while the two remain in contact through messages. The story does not confirm a romantic relationship, but it makes clear that their connection persists. Her final arc emphasizes recovery rather than a perfect return to how she was before, showing a young woman learning to move forward with lasting scars.

Her notable ability is her Quirk, Leap, which grants her the power to jump extraordinarily high, allowing her to reach the tops of buildings in a single bound. It is not flight, and she requires a solid surface to push off from, so her mobility depends on her environment. The Quirk gives her no enhanced strength or defensive power, making her vulnerable in direct fights. Instead, she makes the most of it through agility, urban navigation, and performance, turning a non-combat ability into an asset for scouting, evacuation, and supporting her friends. Alongside this, her real strengths are her intelligence, her perceptiveness, and her determination to keep moving forward even after being broken down.
